Update to 80.18.23 which may include playlist editing??

Forum|alt.badge.img+4

I note the latest Android / IOS App  includes Playlist editing with the caveat:-

80.18.23 (Android)

80.18.25 (iOS)

Release date: 31/03/2025

In this update:

  • Ability to create and edit Sonos playlists
    • Gradual rollout: This feature will be available to all users over time

Having installed this I don’t see any playlist editing features so my question is:

What is the timeline for making this feature available to all?

and will it require another update to activate it ?

Hi @sjw

We can use Optimizely to enable or disable certain UI elements at will without the need for an update. My assumption (from the fact that I installed both app and player updates and yet still don’t see Playlist options) is that this is what is happening with this particular feature roll-out.

I hope this helps.

You need to update the app AND the system.

I’m on iOS and had to wait just a couple of hours.

I suspect users on Android will probably wait a bit longer for it to be fully rolled out as is the case with many Android apps because of the huge variation in handsets and tablets.

Yes, both the app and the os on each device were updated to the latest versions as per the latest release notes and yet there is no playlist editing feature presented in the app hence my questions above.

Perhaps the

  • Gradual rollout: This feature will be available to all users over time

may be pertinent?

Go into Sonos Favourites then Playlists, then tap on a Sonos Playlist that you have created. Tap the three dots and under the menu that appears will be Edit Sonos Playlist.

yes, agreed it is and that’s why I was asking my original questions about timescales…..

It seems that some others with the identical OS and App versions as I have report seeing the playlist editing feature whilst I do not and this I find very disconcerting as it means that Sonos have control from the cloud over the functions any individual can see and they can turn features on and off at will.

That is a very worrying scenario don’t you think?.

A staged rollout is not what you describe.  The simple fact is, the servers used to distribute an update are not populated all at the same time, but that’s a Google/Android/Apple thing, nothing to do with Sonos.  Sonos has no ability to say “Fred gets version X, but Ethel gets version Y, and Lucy is stuck on version Z”.  Unless you are signed up for Beta, you get the version everyone else does.

Sonos can turn features off an on as they see fit.

That’s for all users.  The poster seems to think they can specify functionality at the user level.  Which is silly, both for the complexity of the task, and the thought that Sonos actually cares about something like that.

ok, but as per my original question

I do have the latest Android App version that claims to have the feature and I do have the latest OS on the devices so could you explain in your scenario why the feature doesn’t appear yet?

I have no idea.  But it’s not because Sonos specifically chose to leave out the new functionality for your system.

You seem to miss the point,  its not about individual users at all,  clearly it would affect groups of users by region platform or App Store location etc.     but the point is that if they can add the feature to my installation without me doing anything further (having installed the correct App and OS versions)  then they can take the feature away again.  (for a group or even for all)

That is the concern.

Your concern is silly.  No company uses staged rollouts to withhold new functionality to groups or regions.  The individual app companies aren’t even in charge of the staged rollouts, the OS companies are.  The engineers upload the new version for release to a single server, and the app stores take it from there.

@Editor

Have you tried force closing and reopening the app?

Did the OP check their version number under General Settings->About Your System?  Because I got a firmware update yesterday, but no app update, and I’m still at Build 80.17.09 (Android), which is not the new update.

Yes, that’s been done and the feature does not appear (feature as described by Rhonny in their post above who have seen it).

My App version is confirmed as 80.18.23 (Android)

and all the Sonos devices report that they are at OS Level 84.1.63110

I’d simply give it 24-48 hours. It will appear. As mentioned, there’s no benefit to Sonos in withholding for certain people, so it’ll simply be a roll-out idiosyncrasy.

I didn’t have the ability to edit when the app was updated yesterday (indignation temporarily kicked in for me too). But it appeared little later.

@Rhonny, Are you able to save a queue as a Sonos playlist?

Not sure. I’m not at home. I’ll have a look later but I’m sure others can check and respond in lieu of this.

Actually, my take is that Sonos are able to rollout functionality changes (toggle off and on) once the update has happened. That's how it reads to me anyway.

As to why they might do it, as they say, it “will allow us to monitor performance of the feature and address any issues that may come up.”

The Sonos post reads that way to me at least, hence the poster’s concern.  They said that “Sonos playlists create and edit will be available to users in a controlled, phased rollout (of it's own, separate from the update)”. Why the ‘separate from the ‘update' part if functionality can only be affected by an update? @Corry P , can you clarify?

I'd like it not to be the case as usually things are just a case of checking which software and firmware a user is running and taking it from there - whereas the case here could also be ‘Has the switch been pulled for the user?’ too and there is the ability to affect functionality users receive independent of the software they're running.

I don't view it as withholding functionality.

Or people could just chill a bit and wait a day or so for it to appear.

Me too… 😉

And I‘m not scared of Sonos having the option to do so. I can’t remember they have done so in the past and it was affecting people negatively in any way. At all nobody seems to have recognized such a thing.
Adding Sonos playlists again to the new app obviously wasn’t quite easy, because it took Sonos much longer as estimated. I can understand that they make use of this special tool to have a closer and controlled look at the first days of live operation.
If there occur any unestimated issues, they will be able to release a fix before all users are disappointed and affected by a bug.

Yes, someone could say that’s some kind of beta testing, but no beta test can guarantee all live operation working well.
So for this special situation I‘m sure they carefully decided to use the option and took a close look at the pros and cons.
