I am still running S2 V16.1 and using a Samsung tablet. I'm selling a Play 5 that is not on my system and I want to make sure it is working before I move it on.

If I add it to my system will I be forced to update? And, if so, can I download the new app to my phone and leave the old app running on my tablet.

Yes, that should be possible - I had two different Android devices, one with S2 16.1 and another with S2 80.xx (controlling different Sonos devices on the same network) and it caused no problems. The Play Store has an option to link multiple devices together in terms of installing/updating apps, so you obviously need to make sure that is not enabled.

In your situation I would definitely not try adding it to the existing system, because if it forces a firmware update you may lose the ability to run 16.1, and you probably don’t want that to happen!

Play:5 can prob run on S1 so why not use that for your testing?

Even the newer generation of the Play 5? That's what I got. Can't remember whether it is 5 or five.

THanks. Will try that. Definitely want to keep 16.1 until the mess is sorted out.

Just checked. I have the Five not the Play 5.
