Still no gapless playback for Dolby Atmos

 I’ve been away from this community for a while due to the slow Sonos updates.  After some time you just give up and hope down the road something is done to address the issues you care about.

 I am once again going to state the most important issue I would like to see addressed.  Please fix the not so perfect gapless playback when playing ATMOS music that requires a seamless transition when changing tracks.  A clicking noise or very short silent portion is unacceptable.

 The best test of this is any Atmos version of Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring.  The transition between track 2 & 3 is obvious.

Hi @MoPac

Thanks for your post!

Sorry to hear about this issue you are having with hearing gaps between tracks when playing Atmos music.

What source are you using, please?

Could you please recreate the issue (using the named tracks above) and submit a support diagnostic afterwards, posting here when you have done so? Please don’t share the number given, but please do let me know which room you tested playback in. Thanks.

 Playing either from Apple Music or Amazon Music Unlimited using the Sonos app.  The system is Arc-Sub3-300s.  Only happens with Atmos.  Not really a gap….More like a click.  More apparent in louder passages.

Hi @MoPac

Apologies for the delay - I have been off work.

There are about 20 versions of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring on Apple Music - could you please expand on which version you are listening to, please? Or, please post a screenshot showing the album artwork. Thanks.

@Corry P

 Actually all the Rite of Spring recordings in Dolby Atmos have a click between tracks.  It’s most notable between track 2 & track 3 which is a loud passage in the piece.

 A good example of this gapless issue is the Dolby Labs test disk where they play a drum beat in gapless play.  Although you can’t hear a click because the tracks are silent between the drum beats you can clearly hear that the rhythm is thrown off by the gaps.

Which recording of Rites of Spring? Which streaming company?

@Corry P is much more likely to have the access to stream these tracks than he does owning a copy of the Dolby Labs test disk.

@Airgetlam

 The Dolby test is available in Apple Music & Amazon Music Unlimited.  Try the gapless tracks.

Hi @MoPac

I used the San Francisco Symphony recording of The Rite of Spring. I did hear a click between tracks 2 and 3, but as I did not hear it between any of the other track transitions, I have to assume that there is an issue with the recording there. Certainly, if there were a clicking noise at every track change, I would have passed this report up the chain, but as it currently stands, I can’t justify doing this for one track transition on one album. There are plenty of tracks on the album that end in silence, so if there were a clicking noise to be heard between each track, it should have been easily noticeable with those, but was not.

There were no search results for Dolby Labs on Apple Music.

@Corry P

 The click you heard is in every Atmos version of Rite of Spring.  If I play the stereo version of the same Rite there is no click.

 Listen to the Dolby Labs gapless test files referred to in the other posts here.  You will note there is a loss of perfect rhythm in the drum beats.

 The gap is there on every track, just harder to notice when the transition is quieter.

 Sent a video of the Rite played on my Sonos system to Chris at Audiophile Style.  He agreed the click indicates not so perfect gapless play.  He was unable to reproduce that click on his Atmos system which is not a Sonos system.

@MoPac

Rather than keep going round in circles on that album/track, what about testing with Dark Side of the Moon? That is a great example of a Dolby Atmos album where gapless is needed. And it is very nearly almost perfectly gapless on my Arc/Sub/Symfonisk home theatre setup (playing Apple Music), certainly the earlier tracks blend without any evident transition. There is the tiniest of tiny steps between a couple of later tracks but you’d really have to listen out for them to know they are there.

How is your transition between the first few tracks on that album in Dolby Atmos? Is it as seamless as I’m finding it?

 Just played Rite, San Francisco Symphony on Qobuz.  No click.  Only issue is a huge volume difference with Atmos much louder.

@Rhonny:

 Sorry I haven’t tried Dark Side yet.  I will check that out.

@Rhonny:

 Listening to Dark Side now.  I can clearly hear a flaw in the transition between Speak to Me & Breath.  It’s not a gap; More like a glitch.
 Have you listened to Stravinsky: The Rote of Spring?  Between track 2 & 3 there is clearly a flaw in the transition.  Really irritating.
