Question

Spotify stopped playing because of playback

Hi! I work in a restaurant that has two different rooms where we normally play two different playlists. Normally thats not a problem but we have recently had a message saying “playback from Spotify was stopped because playback was started from another room or device. Spotify limits the number of simultaneous audio streamsyou can access from its services” but that has never been an issue in the past. Is there a way i can fix this? We use Ipads as our music control and our sono’s app to decide the playlists.

Thanks

I’d change the password(s) to your Spotify accounts. I suspect someone else has figured them out, and is using their own systems to access your accounts.

I suspect that an employee or a customer is using their personal Spotify account from their own phone/pad. You can shut this down if you temporarily play something other than Spotify from each of your controllers. You can instruct employees to avoid using their personal accounts. I’m not sure what to do about a customer. Note that once they’ve used your system this way, they could play from home.

How is your network setup? Customers should be restricted to using the Guest segment.

Talk to Spotify and identify the offending/unwanted device.

Spotify does not want users sharing accounts, so you cannot play Spotify in more than one location at the same time.

I seem to remember Spotify did not notice people using the same account for different Sonos rooms in the past. I also think this changed with the new S2 app/firmware in 2024. Since then, it seems Spotify does notice different rooms using the same Spotify account and prevents this type of use.

I am not completely sure if this is right, so maybe other users can chip in. If this really is what is happening in your restaurant, you could use a family account and set up a user for every room - you’d have to make sure to switch users when starting music in another room though.

Other services might be more Sonos friendly, I think Amazon Unlimited Music allows four streams, up from the previous three limit.
