Spotify connect with Sonos

Hi all,

I'm having a strange issue with Spotify Connect and wondered if anyone has experienced the same problem.

I have three separate rooms in the current Sonos app:

• Family Room – Sonos Arc
• Living Room – Beam Gen 2 + two Sonos SL as surrounds + Sub
• Kitchen – standalone Sonos One

All three rooms appear normally in the Sonos app and work correctly. Spotify is added as a music service in Sonos and I can play Spotify music to any of the three rooms from within the Sonos app.

However, in the Spotify Android app, the Sonos rooms generally don't appear under Connect to a device.

Today I started Spotify playback and Family Room ARC suddenly appeared in Spotify Connect and I could control it from Spotify.

The Living Room and Kitchen still don't appear as separate Spotify Connect devices.

As a test, I grouped the other two rooms with the Family Room in the Sonos app. Spotify immediately changed to show “Family Room ARC +2” and successfully controlled all three rooms.

I then ungrouped them again. All three are separate rooms in Sonos, but Spotify still doesn't list Living Room or Kitchen.

I also tried starting Spotify playback on Kitchen directly from the Sonos app and then opening Spotify, but Kitchen still didn't appear as a Spotify Connect device.

So Spotify Connect is clearly communicating with the Sonos system, but it isn't discovering all of the individual rooms.

I've already checked:

• Spotify has Nearby Devices permission on Android
• All three rooms are in the same Sonos system
• Spotify works correctly through the Sonos app
• Sonos Connection Security settings are at their defaults: Authentication OFF, UPnP ON and Guest Access ON
• All three Sonos rooms work normally from the Sonos app

Has anyone seen Spotify Connect discover no Sonos speakers but then when playing a track, only one Sonos room appears in the list while the others remain missing?

I'd particularly be interested to know whether this turned out to be a Sonos discovery issue, Spotify account issue, or network/mDNS issue.

If you force close Spotify app and reopen, do the other Sonos rooms then appear as options?

Thanks for your response - No they dont, no matter what i try, rebooting wifi, deleting my sonos system and starting again did also not work, just cant understand why… only when i play a track in spotify on my connected device such as my phone and then go in the list will my sonos arc will appear on its own, i then select that which works fine but still none of the other 2 devices show, i add them add to the group through the sonos app and the spoitfy will show Arc +2.

I stop music playing, force close the spotify app closed and reopen and the Sonos arc has disappeared again from the list.

What is your network setup? Are the other rooms connecting to extenders or different nodes to the Arc?

Hi Mr T, no extenders or mesh nodes. Everything connects directly to the same Plusnet router.

One thing that may be relevant is that I’ve previously had difficulty connecting the Sonos speakers during setup because they connect on 2.4GHz, while my router uses both 2.4GHz and 5GHz under the same network. I’ve previously had to temporarily disable 5GHz to get the Sonos speakers connected, then switch 5GHz back on afterwards.

I’m going to test later by temporarily disabling 5GHz so that my phone and all the Sonos speakers are definitely on 2.4GHz, then see whether all the rooms appear in Spotify Connect.

Tested this now. I completely disabled 5GHz on the Plusnet router so my phone and Sonos were all on 2.4GHz, but unfortunately it made no difference.

Today Spotify Connect is showing only the Family Room Arc. Living Room (Beam Gen 2) and Kitchen (Sonos One) don't appear at all. Interestingly the Beam is actually one of my newer Sonos products, so it doesn't seem related to the age of the speakers.

All three rooms continue to appear and work perfectly in the Sonos app, including playing Spotify directly from Sonos. It's only Spotify Connect that isn't discovering them individually?

Thanks. I’ve done a bit more checking of the network connections for each Sonos room.
Family Room Arc – appears in Spotify Connect
2.4GHz, Channel 6, BSSID ending :29, SNR 63dB
Living Room Beam Gen 2 – does NOT appear
2.4GHz, Channel 6, same BSSID ending :29, SNR 70dB
Kitchen Sonos One – does NOT appear
5GHz, Channel 36, BSSID ending :28, SNR 35dB
So the Arc and Beam are connected to exactly the same WiFi access point, same 2.4GHz band and same channel. The Beam actually has the stronger signal, yet Spotify only discovers the Arc.
I’ve also tried completely disabling 5GHz on the router so everything was forced onto 2.4GHz, but that made no difference.
All rooms are visible and work normally in the Sonos app, including playing Spotify through the Sonos app. The problem seems specifically to be Spotify Connect not discovering the individual rooms.
Does this point towards a Spotify Connect/discovery issue rather than the WiFi connection itself? Is there anything else you would suggest checking?

Another interesting update. I have just tested Amazon Music as well as Spotify.

Amazon Music behaves exactly the same way – only the Family Room Arc appears as an available Sonos speaker. The Living Room Beam Gen 2 and Kitchen speaker do not appear.

All three rooms remain visible and fully controllable within the Sonos app.

So this doesn't appear to be specific to Spotify. It looks like the Arc is the only room being exposed to external music apps for some reason.

Given the Arc and Beam are connected to exactly the same WiFi access point, band, channel and BSSID, is there something within the Sonos system that could cause only one room to be advertised to external apps?

Some days odd things happen.

Something that seems to clear a lot of oddities is a system refresh, a bit of an aggravation to do but worth a try.

Power down ALL Sonos, reboot router and controller, power up the Sonos. With multiple APs, maybe reboot them along with the router?

In the Spotify app, if you Clear Cache under Settings & Privacy > Data Saving & Offline, then fully remove and reinstall the Spotify app on your Android device, do the missing rooms appear as targets?

You could also try reauthorising Spotify in the Sonos app.

Also, do you have another mobile device that you can check on?

I have a new home andriod tablet that i installed at weekend, it shows the same problem as my samsung phone. i also wanted to rule out spotify by installing amazon music and see what the ‘cast to’ list shows, that is the same as spotify, nothing! i have just tried Sonos tech support, they have issued a reboot signal to my system, they believe it could be a bandwwidth issue, as the sonos diagnostic seems to point to these issues below, however i have never experienced any playback droput:

“SONOS Based on the diagnostic you shared earlier, the system reported the following:

  • Audio dropout detected on Sonos.
  • Audio playback may be disrupted due to low bandwidth, which can cause stuttering, skipping, or playback stopping.
  • Synchronization errors were detected during playback, which may result in audio dropouts and or stuttering.
  • This may also lead to a sluggish controller response, missing rooms, or audio issues with one or more Sonos components.”

Have you tried all three available 2.4 gHz channels? A different 5 gHz one?

A Wifi monitor program on your tablet might help pick the best channel. I use the Ubiquity WiFi and app from the Google store with excellent results. It includes some handy testing options too.
