Can I use Spotify connect with Play:3 and Play:5 generation 1 ?

The reason I want to use Spotify connect, rather than just the Sonos app, is the iPhone will be in Spotify offline mode (and hence playing playlists previously downloaded), purely to save data.

It’s being used in a garage with no PC, or broadband, but there is a 4G router (with limited monthly data). I tend to listen to the same playlists, so it’d be daft to use data for no reason.

I tried it today, and none of the speakers showed up in Spotify connect, though the same iPhone works fine on my home Sonos set-up which is multiple Move:1 Gen 1, and an Amp Gen 1.

Sonos app working fine in the garage set-up, with Spotify account, but data use too high as mentioned.

It’s a new iPhone set-up (recently reset), with a fresh install of Sonos S1 and Spotify.

cheers

Not acquainted with off line mode with Spotify Connect, but are you sure this is supposed to work? To me this seems mutually exclusive, using WiFi for Spotify Connect, but not streaming the music.

That’s a very valid point, I think you maybe correct. I’ve been using offline mode with Spotify in the garage, just with a cheaper Bluetooth speaker previously, and that was working fine.

Wanted better sound though, hence have setup my old Gen 1 speakers in the garage (all working fine with S1 app).

Hadn’t considered that Spotify offline mode, might disable Spotify connect to WiFi speakers (eg my Gen 1 Sonos). Thank you for pointing that out.

Thing is, I couldn’t even get Spotify connect to work today in the garage with my Play:3 and Play:5 Gen 1 speakers with Spotify streaming still turned on (hadn’t got as far as putting it into offline mode). It couldn’t find the speakers at all. I’m sure I had this working at home previously, only difference I can think of, is that my Sonos amp at home is connected to the router via Ethernet. Might try that in the garage, see if that makes Sonos connect happier.

I’ll also do a test to see if Spotify (not in offline mode) always uses data playing a previously downloaded playlist, or whether it plays from the local copy. Only just considered offline mode might not be required anyway. A quick google shows it just uses minimal data, eg analytics etc.
