I have a Ray soundbar I use for TV and to stream music from Spotify. I prefer very much to use Spotify Connect from the app than the Sonos app, which is rather limited.

I have set up Ray correctly, I can:

  • Hear TV
  • Stream from the Sonos app
  • Stream from Spotify
  • Stream from iPhone’s AirPlay

But after a while without using the speaker, Ray disappears from Spotify Connect, only sometimes it remains visible as an AirPlay destination (it remains available for the Sonos app though). The only way to get it visible in every system is to start over again from the Sonos app: Settings > Network > Manage networks > Update networks, as if the speaker was brand new.

Is there a way to avoid that behavior? In another house I have a system with a One and a Play:1 that works consistently and it’s always available, that’s what I look forward to achieve...

Hi @naio

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Sorry to hear of this issue you are having with your Ray going missing from Spotify Connect and AirPlay.

The fact that going through the WiFi setup helps with the situation implies that the speaker is reconnecting to the router at this stage, and it is this reconnection that helps. This likely means that the router had erroneously assigned the IP address that the Ray had to another device, although there are other possibilities too.

I recommend not only rebooting the router (by switching it off for at least 30 seconds), but also repeating this every couple of months at least, whether you see any issues or not. Reserving an IP address for all your regularly-connected devices (especially the Ray) is a good idea too, which may mean you can get away with not rebooting so often. Both are good practices, really. If reserving alone does not help, keep up the reboots.

If you have a router that was supplied by your ISP, it is likely very low cost - one bought from a store for ~€60 (at least) would serve you much better (first confirm with your ISP that this is an option, and which connection type you would need) in terms of features, power, and reliability. If you have WiFi coverage issues, a WiFi mesh system for ~€150 would be a good idea (they should replace a router where possible, or be placed in Bridge/Access Point mode).

I hope this helps.

Hi @Corry P,

I think I can set up the router to reserve a fixed IP address for the speaker but can I tell Ray the address it must connect to? I haven’t found this option in the Sonos app, if you know how, please tell me.

Thank you,

It isn’t set in the Sonos app, it is set in your router’s settings. You may want to check your router’s manual for something like ‘reserved IP address’ or something similar. Each router, it seems, handles the process slightly differently, otherwise I suspect an FAQ could be put up. I’d imagine as it is, it would just be too large and too hard to maintain, with the number and variations of routers out there.

It would be especially nice if the specs for DHCP allowed a client the smarts to do so, but that might cause issues, I think. Not sure why it doesn’t.
