Sonos update failed to download

"We found an update. Let's get Sonos runnning on the latest software." I click Update.

"The Sonos controller installer failed to download. Your controller did not update successfully. Please try updating one more time..."

So it sees that there's an update but it can't download it. Using Sonos Controlller for PC 11.15, Sonos OS is S1. Operating system is Win10 Pro. I have two speakers, both Play Ones.

I shut down my PC, rebooted my router, turned on my PC, plugged a play1 into an open ethernet cable, opened the Sonos S1 Controller program on my PC, it saw there was an update, I clicked Update and I still get the same “The Sonos controller installer failed to download” error message. Please advise.

Did you try to uninstall & reinstall the Sonos app on the Windows 10 machine?  Like I said mine usually tells me the update failed, but still works.  Also I no longer get the update available message.

Do you only use your computer, or a phone as well? If a phone, is that up to date?

On my Windows 10 I get that update failed message every time I update.  In my case it’s a false message.  The update actually completed successfully.

I also use the “Sonos S1 Controller” app on my iPhone. It is version 11.16.1 and appears to be up-to-date.

The problem is I cannot update my music library until I successfully update. If I go to the “Manage” menu, “Update Music Library Now” is grayed-out. Is there a way to enable it?

What if you remove the Sonos app, download the latest version and install that?

The update I'm referring to is a software update of the Windows Sonos app.  You will not be able to index your library until the Windows Sonos software is updated.

When I update my Windows Sonos software it often shows an error stating the update failed, but “Update Music Library Now” is no longer grayed-out.  So it seems to have successfully updated.

Lately I use the phone app to index my library.

Same problem here. Tried it over a couple of days. Receive a message to update or S1 might not work properly. Get “failed to download” each time. Windows 10

I would recommend that you submit a system diagnostic within 10 minutes of experiencing this problem, and call Sonos Support to discuss it. Don’t post the resulting diagnostic number here, Sonos’ lawyers get sensitive about GDPR, I suspect.

There may be information included in the diagnostic that will help Sonos pinpoint the issue and help you find a solution.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

Same update download failure. Running S1 version 11.15.4, download failed on Windows 10 system. Multiple attempts over multiple days all have the same failure message.

Download and install worked OK on Windows 11 system, updated to version 11.16.1.

Microsoft no longer provide mainstream support for Windows 10 (or any previous releases), however the Sonos website suggests the Sonos S1 Desktop App is supported on Windows 7+, and S2 on Windows 8+

https://support.sonos.com/en-gb/article/sonos-app-requirements

Sonos desktop app
  macOS 10.12 and higher
  Windows 8 and higher

Sonos S1 Controller desktop app
  macOS 10.12 and higher
  Windows 7 and higher

Time to review the Sonos Desktop App requirements on website?

MoPac - Thanks for the reply. My S1 works fine without the update. I’m hesitant to delete it and reinstall in case I lose it. I’m slowly moving to my Win 11 system, so I’ll live with the download message.

Be well - Otto24

One thing to remember is most of your Sonos system exists on the Sonos hardware. The controller you use is only a method by which you interact with it, there is (almost) nothing stored in the controller. This allows you to have multiple controllers connected to the same system if desired, and all should show you the same data. It also means, as long as you use the ‘connect to existing system’ option when installing, there is no effect when deleting a controller. You’re always safe todo a delete and reinstall.

I do not use the library function, but does this mean the Windows app is not necessary to index the library?

Yes, all the ‘work’ is done at the system (Sonos device) level, the controller is just the display. If I recall properly, there was a need originally for the controller app to be installed on Windows machines in order for the Sonos system to be able to ‘see’ local (windows stored) files, but I think now that everything is SMB accessed, it is no longer the case.
