I am struggling to set up an older S1 system. I have a 1x Beam (Gen1) and 4x Sonos Play - and am using the Sonos S1 app.

When I open the Sonos S1 app on my phone I can add the Beam (and it is all working). However, if I then go to Add Product - I am getting a message on ‘Sonos app needs updating’, which then takes me to the app store and forces me to download the most recent Sonos app.

However, when I go into the most recent Sonos app - it tells me it can find the Sonos systems on the network, but when I hit join it then tells me it is only compatable with the S1 controller (which I already knew) and takes me back to the start screen again.

And so I appear in a loop?

I also don’t appear to be able to update any of the products. Again - they tell me the app needs updating. The same happens when I run a system compatibility check. It tries to force me onto the latest app which it doesn’t appear to like

Everything is wired directly to the router, so that can’t be the issue…

Any thoughts?

Hi @NeilHow, welcome to the Sonos Community!

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having issues getting your S1 system set up.

It sounds like the app is taking you to the new version of the app rather than the S1 version of the app. If that’s the case, then that explains why you’re seeing the ‘compatible with S1’ message. I would recommend deleting the Sonos app you have installed on your phone then following the link from our downloads page to get the latest S1 version of the app. Just scroll down to ‘Sonos S1 Controller App’ on that page and tap either iOS or Android. You’ve done that and reconnected, try the ‘Add Product’ button again to see if you get the same error message.

If you do, I’d suggest reaching out to our support team to troubleshoot this issue with them. If not, then add your devices to the system and try the following steps to get your speakers updated:

  1. From the Settings tab, select System.
  2. Under System Settings, select System Updates.
  3. Select Check for Updates.

I wouldn’t recommend running the System Compatibility Check, as that tool is used when you want to update from S1 to S2. However, the speakers you have listed on your profile are compatible with the S2 app, so if you wanted to, you can update to S2 with the System Compatibility Check and run your system that way.

I hope this helps!

Hey!

It seems like you’re stuck in a loop between the Sonos S1 app and the newer app. Here’s what you can try:

  1. Stick with the Sonos S1 app for your older system—ignore the prompt to update to the newer app.

  2. Force close both apps and reopen the S1 app to add your products.

  3. Clear cache (Android) or reinstall (iOS) the S1 app to reset any issues.

  4. Restart your devices (phone, Beam, and router) to sync everything.

Hopefully, this helps you get past the loop! Let me know how it goes!
