Sonos is not accessing my stored music files properly.

A Sonos problem has cropped up today that I need your assistance with.

My music files are stored on a Synology NAS and at present Sonos (as operated from both my Imac and my Iphone) has lost some of its contact with the NAS.  I can play NAS-contained files that are already in one of my playlists (by accessing the playlist and adding to the queue), but I can't scroll through my whole Music Library collection -- if I try to do this (Music Library -> click on Artists, Genres, Albums, etc.) , I get "No selections are available".

Also, in displaying a listing for a file (via the above-mentioned playlist method) instead of displaying the stored metadata title of the file, it displays the filename-plus-extension.

 Any assistance with these problems will be much appreciated!

A good first step is a network refresh, it won't identify what is wrong but it is often the cure for odd issues we can't identify due to lack of access to the hidden internal data.

Power down ALL Sonos, reboot router, NAS and controller(s) then power the Sonos back up.

If the library is still corrupted force a reindex from the controller menu.

And, while that is an excellent option (and one I’d recommend as well), if that doesn’t change anything, I would recommend that you submit a system diagnostic within 10 minutes of experiencing this problem, and call Sonos Support to discuss it. Don’t post the resulting diagnostic number here. We in the public don’t have access to that data.

There may be information included in the diagnostic that will help Sonos pinpoint the issue and help you find a solution.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

@abr88

Is the album art also missing?

My library also dates from 2005. Over the years Sonos has asked that the library indexer be run again. I suspect that, while the file names remain the same in playlists, the storage structure may have evolved such that current controllers cannot deal with an older storage structure.

Plus the change from HTTP to SMB may have had an impact.

Do you specify the library path using a name (//music/) or an IP (//123.123.1.123/music)?

If the former it may be worth changing to the IP path naming option. I saw this issue a while back and turned out, for some reason and after 10 years,  Sonos had lost the path when using a name. Existing playlists were fine, library access otherwise wasn't (your issue exactly).

Support advised changing to IP and all was, and has been since, fine. If doing this however I would also fix the IP on your router as should it change the library will become absent again…

(As an aside if Sonos displays the file name of a track rather than metadata derived information then, in my experience, it generally indicates that it can not see the referenced file.)
