SHORT VERSION The Sonos app on my desktop machine shows content from the Plex server on my NAS. Sonos apps on my iOS devices on the same network do not show any Plex content. Why not?
DETAILS
My music library is on a Synology NAS.
I installed Plex Server on the same NAS.
I have installed Plex as a content service in Sonos.
The Sonos app running on my desktop machine sees the Plex server and shows its contents.
The Sonos apps running on my iOS devices do not see the Plex server. They show Plex as a service, but when I select that service there is no list of available content. It’s just blank. Looks to me like they are not connecting with the media server.
I also have the Plex app installed on the iOS devices. The Plex app on those devices is finding and displaying the Plex content just fine.
The NAS, the desktop machine, and the iOS devices are all on the same network. Their IP addresses are all on one VLAN.
The desktop machine is connected via ethernet. I’m guessing that’s significant.
The networking devices are Unifi, if that’s relevant.
The Plex server has remote access disabled. I assume that should be fine since all the devices are on one VLAN. Nothing’s remote. And one Sonos app is able to display the content.

@Bumper Thanks for the suggestion , as per @Ken_Griffiths suggestion above I turned off Hibernation as per your suggestion above and re-ran my test and unfortunately it made no difference. FYI: Ther Sonos Plex service always ok via SonoPad app, old Sonos 16.1 app and new Sonos web app. It only times out using new IOS app. Ross.
Sorry I missed that, I should have known Ken would cover that as he’s very thorough.

An update on my Plex timeout issue just in case it helps anyone else…
In an attempt to speed up the Plex response to Sonos I ticked-off nearly all of the Plex music library “Recommended” setting within Plex below. All of them were previously ticked. When I now select the Plex service within the new Sonos app it now (nearly always) responds with data as expected.
Just FYI: The only area where Plex still fails is when I go into “Other Sources” within the Plex response to Sonos where it fails with “Unable to load content” in the Sonos web app and “Something Went Wrong. Try Again” in the new Sonos IOS app. I am not concerned with this error though.
If Sonos are following this thread, I request that you increase your timeout value when you are waiting for a response from Plex.
Ross
@Ken_Griffiths@Bumper My Plex latency issue has appeared off and on again over the last week or so. I have been speaking to Sonos about this and just FYI here is their latest comments…
Since the launch of the new Sonos app, we’ve seen customers in Australia, New Zealand and other parts of the APAC region having latency or delay while navigating the app. This behaviour you’ve encountered while navigating Plex in the Sonos app seems to be related to this issue and we’d like to let you know that we are actively investigating this and do not have an ETA to share.
Assuming you guys are not in the Asia Pacific area that would probably explain why it is working fine for you. The Sonos IOS app is sometimes quite laggy (but useable) for me even outside of the Plex service, which would also be explained by the above comments from Sonos.
Ross.

The odd bit here is you mentioned that the Service on Sonos only struggled when you went into the “Other Sources” area which in my case shows my two NAS Plex servers and if I select one, or the other, it selects that server for display in the usual way to browse that chosen server. That normally takes place locally, or so I thought as it uses NAT loopback on the router to then access the local Plex server. I’m just not sure therefore why it would vary by region. When I get a second, I will post some photos of my ‘other sources’ area just to make sure we’re referring to the same place in the Sonos Plex display.
Just to add something further too @rosswells127, the two GNU Linux, simple mirrored raid-1 NAS boxes here, although now ‘old’ (and perhaps due for replacement) were customised/upgraded by myself long ago and they do have additional RAM - I put in a total of at least 8GB in each NAS if I remember correctly. They also each use ‘teamed’ gigabit (dual Ethernet) adapters in ‘round robin’ mode, so they are fairly fast, even by modern day standards for a NAS box, so that too might be a reason if there is some sort of time-out affecting the Sonos Plex service. So there could be some mileage in that too, ‘perhaps’, depending on the spec. capabilities of the NAS you have - maybe if there is a ‘time-out’ in play here, perhaps Sonos (or Plex) may need to adjust things slightly… still not sure though why it might only affect some regions, we shall have to see?
@Ken_Griffiths I have 8gb RAM in my NAS and also use the dual ethernet capability. Here is the “Other Sources” option displayed within Plex option in SonoPhone. It displays something if I select it. The same option appears on the new IOS Sonos app but comes up with “Something went wrong, try again” after a few seconds when I select it.
Give me a second and I’ll make a screen capture video of what I’m seeing here… I’ll post back shortly.
This is what I see in Plex "other sources”…
So when I select ‘other sources’ I initially see both my NAS boxes/Plex servers and if I select either one, it takes back to what is just the opening screen for that particular NAS/Plex server.
edit: I guess its just a way to switch between whichever Plex server I want to use with Sonos.
Does that help?
@Ken_Griffiths On SonoPhone, SonoPad and the old Sonos app my Plex server is listed under “Other Sources”. If I select my Plex Server from there then nothing happens, which is fine. I am not too concerned with the “Something went wrong, try again” message when doing the same test using the new Sonos app as initially my Plex account had access to music on another external Plex server which I only occasionally used. I removed this access when initially diagnosing this problem and will probably never reactivate it. FYI: Sonos fixed some iPad issues with 80.04.04 including an issue where it didn’t display Favorites correctly. So far under 80.04.04 when I select “Plex” from the main Sonos Services list it consistently returns nothing on first attempt but always returns the Plex results on 2nd attempt which is fine for what I need at this time. Ross.
I had to enable Plex remote access for it to work with Sonos.

You shouldn’t have to, as Plex uses NAT loopback - if not enabled already, perhaps see if enabling ‘UPnP’ (auto port forwarding) on your router will resolve that issue for you.

Ross.
I wonder if the external Plex server is the cause of the ‘something went wrong’ issue here? I wonder if the Sonos Plex service is still looking for that under ‘other sources’? Maybe check your online Sonos account and/or consider removing/re-adding the Plex service on Sonos again (if perhaps not tried already).
If it can’t be resolved, then I would go onto reproduce the issue, then immediately submit a Sonos system diagnostic report from within the Sonos App, note it’s reference and then contact/chat with Sonos Support via this LINK to discuss the matter in detail and see what the Staff can perhaps then suggest to resolve the matter.
Thanks Ken. Yes, I had already tried removing/re-addeding the Plex service. I will do as you say and submit a diagnostic. I have previously found Sonos support in NZ really poor, but perhaps that has changed. Ross.

Plex hasn’t been working fine- well it’s working fine with SonoPhone and Plexamp and airplay but not the new app. Issues started again since ~June 24 app update. I’m not in the Asia Pacific Area though.
The comments from Sonos are really interesting.
Hi,
i tried to fix the same issue.
Other Source dosent work until now.
I run it on a synology and it worked until the new app (Android).
In the Web-App it also dosent respond on other sources.
I am able to play the music only from one folder.
Any new suggestions?

Just to clarify are you referring to the Plex service not working on the Android Sonos App? You asked for suggestions here, so my thoughts are to simply use a playlist to play your tracks across folders etc. See attached screen-capture video from my Android controller, just as an example of playing a playlist on Plex. Just add your *.m3u playlist (or whatever format you prefer to use for your own playlists) to your local library and add them to Plex and they should then be accessible via Sonos/Plex too.
Hi Ken,
first thanks for the answer.
That is not a option for me.
At the moment it is not possible to create a playlist from another folder.
I am only able to play form the first folder from the Plex-Server in the Sonos-App.
It seems that the new App isnt designed to access “Multi-Folder”. The same issue is using Plex-Amp. You can access only the “Main-Folder” in my case it is “Parents-Longplayer”. If you chose “other scources” it is not possible. In PlexAmp you can see the folder but you cant run it on a Sonos Device. So it seems that the issue is the firmware. With the old app and firmware was it possible.
I contact the Sonos-Support and they send me now from the “First-Level-Support” to the second. It seems that they need some time to analyse the problem. The already said that they dont think that my network is the problem. It think i have to wait until next week. At least i hope so. :)
