Before I take the plunge with Sonos tech support, can anyone offer advice re. why my Sonos app for the iPhone 16 will no longer allow input to play music from the Music Library stored on my PC? It appears I can select and play music from my library through the Sonos web app but not from my phone. I can stream content from the app through my Sonos speakers but the library won't play from the app even though it sees all content on my phone.

I realise that the adoption of SMBv3 might be responsible for this issue.  I have a huge library of music on iTunes and the ability to play that directly, vs. streaming, through Sonos speakers was the main reason I invested in Sonos hardware in the first place, several years ago.  I suspect Sonos does not care about this failure; there’s no money for them in direct network sharing.  A Wifi expert has often urged me to get Apple Music, which can reproduce my library for streaming but I’d then have to cancel Spotify, on which I have built many playlists over fifteen years but which would then be redundant.

I’d really appreciate know what thoughts there are here before I call Sonos tech support and get given the runaround, i.e. no proper acknowledgement of the problem, futile advice to uninstall/reinstall everything, etc.  Needless to say, the app is fully up to date, ditto my Sonos firmware and the shared folder route on my PC can find my Sonos system as intended, it’s just that the app won’t take input from my music library.

I’d realty value some wisdom/assistance with this so that I can avoid wasting time and effort with Sonos and determine if there is even a viable solution.  Thank you.

In case you haven’t seen this, it’s worth a look:

Share your Windows music folder with Sonos

Add your music library to Sonos

Since you can play from your local music library using the web app, that would indicate the music share is set up properly.

What is the error you receive when trying to play something from the Music Library using your phone? Which controller? iOS or Android? Assuming S2, since you can play from the Music Library using the web app, which is only S2.

Can you play from any other music source using your phone Sonos controller?

Thank you for your response.

iOS. No error message, just no response at all to input when I try to select songs/playlists, no “blink” to acknowledge the input. Interestingly, if I select the three-dot icon beside a song and then hit “play song”, I’ll see a “loading” rotating circle briefly and then the song will play. If there were a shortcut to do this for every song in my library, I would, but I can’t do it for literally thousands of individual songs.

What happens when you select from the home screen Music Library → Artists → pick one → pick an album. Press the play button at the top next to the room name.

That’s certainly odd, if one controller works, and another doesn’t. Not supposed to be that way.

I would recommend that you submit a system diagnostic within 10 minutes of experiencing this problem, one from each controller,  and call Sonos Support to discuss it. Don’t post the resulting diagnostic numbers here.

There may be information included in the diagnostics that will help Sonos pinpoint the issue and help you find a solution.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.
