So, I purchased a new home which had a Sonos set up - three wall speakers in three rooms hooked up to my router. I downloaded the Sonos app and it worked fine - until today. When I opened it, there was a message that an update was available and I had no options but to download an update. It would not allow me to do anything else or continue until I did the update. Until now everything worked just fine. All I ever wanted to do was play some music (usually a radio station) and nothing more. I know my TV’s will connect but the audio through Sonos is terrible compared to the basic TV audio so, just a radio in the background for the day. I do not use my cell phone for anything but making and getting calls and texting, even that rarely. My cellular data is not connected and I only use an internet connection rarely. Since I am the only one in the household that is even semi computer literate, having the software simply shut down because of a software update when I am not here is not acceptable as it means that the radios will work until they don’t so why bother with them, just put a radio in each room???

So my question is: is there other software that I can use to run the Sonos speakers or is there some way that I can tell the Sonos software that I do not require or want updates. Sort of, if it works, don’t fix it.

Thanks MoPac but it looks like Sonophone is specifically for iPhone and iPod. I need an application for Windows 10 on a desk top.


Not sure, if you’re unwilling to apply updates when they’re released, why you purchased a ‘smart’ speaker system. If you’re unwilling to take that short software/firmware update process periodically, you may want to revert to older technology, which doesn’t have any programming to update. 


 What were you trying to do with the Windows 10 Sonos app?  I did not know you weren’t able to do anything with the Windows Sonos app without taking the update.  There some things grayed out, but I thought you could still play music.

 The only thing I use the Windows Sonos app for is to add a share or do a re-index.  Yes … those are grayed out until I take the update.  I took the last one a few days ago.  No issues.  I actually did not know there was a Windows Sonos app update and I was playing music from the app with no issues.  I don’t check the computer version very often.

Not taking software & firmware updates can cause more problems than not taking those updates.

 You can use the web player at  play.sonos.com.  Limited functions though.


Block update.Sonos.com at your router.
Disable player firmware updates in the app. Update this manually only after checking it is safe and new bug free.

Consider changing to S1 if your players support it as the new Sonos apps and firmware have many bugs.

Ignoring the update or don’t issue let us try to solve your problem.

Often Sonos gets confused after an update or even power failure. The quick fix is to power down ALL Sonos, reboot the router and Controller device, then power up the Sonos.

If this keeps happening sometimes setting static/reserved IP addresses will solve it. See your router’s DHCP Settings page to do that. Once done do the power cycle - rebpoot one more time to lock in the new addresses.


Airgetlam, I guess your suggestion is the best - go back to a more basic technology. I did not “purchase” the Sonos system, it came with the house which is why I tried it.

MoPac, when I opened the app, the only option I was given was “Click Here to Update” nothing greyed out just a black screen with the click box and that statement. I did accept the update and everything worked fine but unfortunately the other people in this household are not computer literate and just leave things until I get back which is sometimes weeks. What I came here for was in case there was a quick-fix downloadable software that would direct online music to the Sonos system to make things easy for people who have difficulties with high tech.

I will keep looking but, in any case, the Sonos system looks nice but does not add a lot of quality to the environment. Thanks everyone for your help and patience.

 


 You may want to try the phone app as there is talk suggesting the PC app may not be available in the near future.


You can operate the SONOS system using the Windows desktop controller, but you cannot fully configure the system with this controller. Only the SONOS phone/pad Apps can be used to configure the system. In the controller is an option to prevent automatic updates. Evidently, the previous owner had enabled automatic updates.

Unless you are willing to install a phone/pad controller, using it only for setup, you should consider selling the system because we expect the Windows desktop controller to be disabled soon.
