I almost exclusively use Spotify with/through Sonos.  Up until the latest Sonos update just over a week ago, I was able to start playing a playlist or song from Spotify through Sonos, then open up the Sonos menu and click “Start Radio.”  That would instantiate a Spotify radio station based on the song that was playing, which I then added to my Sonos favorites.  I also created several home automation routines through my HA Hub (Hubitat) so that I could kickoff any of those radio stations with voice commands to Alexa/Echo.  That was all working perfectly until the last Sonos update (v 80.07.03).  The Hubitat Sonos integration supports playing a Sonos favorite.

Since the last Sonos update, I noticed my home automation voice commands weren’t working.  So, I then started using the Sonos app and found that playing Spotify Radio Stations has completely broken.  Whenever I attempt to play one of the aforementioned Sonos Favorites (Spotify radio stations), Sonos switches to the “Play” icon, nothing happens, and about a second later it switches back to Pause.  In other words, it’s failing.  Further, when I attempt the aforementioned process to create a new Radio Station from within Sonos, again, nothing happens.  The “Start Radio” menu selection is still there in the Sonos menu, but when I tap it, the currently-playing track stops playing but nothing happens - no new radio station, no more music.

I can still play a Spotify radio station if I use the Spotify app and select my Sonos speakers.  If I do that, I no longer see the cross-fade switch available in the Sonos menu.  And, once I’ve started that radio station in Spotify, if I move over the Sonos app I can still save the currently-playing station as a Sonos Favorite, but if I stop the music, and attempt to start that newly-saved radio station again from within Sonos, it fails in the same manner described above.

Given all the issues with the latest app releases, and the fact that this all broke immediately after the last Sonos app update, it’s evident that Sonos is the culprit here, and not Spotify.  Something in the Spotify integration has broken OR Sonos has decided to stop supporting Spotify Radio stations (without telling us).

Has anyone else noticed/experienced this issue since the last update?

I have this issue occasionally as well but I notice in the Alexa app that default music services are split between Family and identified users that Alexa recognises.  I’m not sure when this changed but I wonder if this could be the cause of the issue?

While I have been using Alexa to play Spotify radio stations on Sonos, I’m not using Alexa’s integration with Spotify to do so. I’m rather using Alexa to kickoff a routine (rule) on my home automation hub where I have built rules, using it’s integration with Sonos, to group speakers, set crossfade & repeat, set volume levels and then play one of my Sonos Favorites.  I have eliminated Alexa, and my home automation hub, as playing any part in this new issue, as it happens just with using the Sonos app directly.

I use Hubitat (C8 Pro) as well and I seem to need to remove the Alexa Hubitat skill occasionally. It might be worth a try.

I don't think think Sonos has ever supported Radio stations within Spotify via Alexa, so your use of Hubitat probably gets around this.

@Corry P  - per your request, I just attempted to re-create my two issues, both related to Spotify radio stations, and to my pleasant surprise, everything is working normally again.  I’ve been struggling with this problem for the past 3-4 days before I posted here in the community yesterday - nothing in my environment has changed in the last 24 hours.  I’m still using app version 80.07.03 and I haven’t done any other diagnotic steps of any kind.

To recap...

Issue #1: Playing a previously-created Spotify radio station in my Sonos Favorites (created from within Sonos, not Spotify, see issue #2).  I select my “Living Room” room, then from my Sonos Favorites list I select one of my favorites, which happens to be a Spotify radio station, and then tap the play button.  Previously, the play button would change to a pause button for a split second, then switch back to a play button, and then nothing.  HOWEVER, THIS NOW WORKS.  So, my existing Spotify radio stations saved as Sonos Favorites are all now playing perfectly fine.

Issue #2: Creating a new Spotify radio station from within the Sonos App.  While a Spotify song is already playing, I access the “...” menu from the Sonos App currently-playing page, then tap “Start Radio” below the Spotify icon to start a new Spotify radio station based on the currently playing song. Previously the currently-playing song would just stop, then nothing.  System stops.  And tapping Play again also did nothing - it wouldn’t even restart playing the track I was playing before I attemped to “start radio.”  I would have to go back and select another song, album or playlist - radio stations would not play.  NOW THIS ALL WORKS AGAIN.  I was able to create a new Spotify radio station from a currently playing track, which then immediately plays, then select it from my “Recently Played” list (in Sonos) and add it to my Sonos Favorites.  And then, per process #1 above, was able to play that newly-created station just fine again.  It should also be noted that, when I open the “...” menu while a Spotify radio station is playing, the cross-fade switch is again available (it had previously disappeared from that menu altogether).

So, I’m not sure what happened in the last 24 hours - perhaps something in the cloud on the Sonos side got changed/fixed? Or maybe something with Spotify (although I can’t imagine how that would impact the visibility of the cross-fade button)? - but everything once again works as it did prior to the recent app update.

Anyway, I’m happy to have everything working again, and hoping it remains that way :-)

Hi @SHL

Thanks for updating the thread, and I am glad to hear that things are working properly for you again! I suspect that it was Spotify that fixed this, but I’m not entirely sure.
