Hello

EDIT:

This post was incorrectly tagged as a “question”. It’s a “conversation”.

Occasionally the Sonos App may not behave as you like or maybe a feature is missing such as the volume slider for example. Rather than push the panic button here are a few things you might try that don’t involve unplugging all Sonos and/or rebooting your router. Incidentally, if rebooting your router is necessary it’s a good idea to unplug ALL Sonos before doing so.

OK…getting back to my original premise about trouble shooting the Sonos app…

Step 1_Check for updates and install if available:

  • App Store (iOS)
  • Play Store (Android)

Step 2_If no updates are available:

  • Stop the app on your device and restart it. That’s essentially a reboot which can resolve a multitude of issues.

Step 3_If Step 2 doesn’t’ resolve the issue:

  • Delete the app
  • Reboot your device and join your Wi-Fi
  • Reinstall the app from the App Store (iOS) or Play Store (Android).
  • Go to Step 4

Step 4_Do the following in order:

  1. Open the app
  2. Select “Join an existing system  (Do not create a new system)
  3. Accept all prompts for location services, Bluetooth and so forth
  4. Sign in with your credentials
  5. Go to settings (Cog Wheel in upper right) and choose to “Enable Improved Navigation” (if that is your choice) *
  6. Click on the Human silhouette (Upper Right)
  7. Scroll to “Content Services”
  8. Select “Your Preferred Service” **

I hope the above helps to mitigate frustration with the Sonos App. Enjoy your Sonos!

Step 5_If none of the above suggestions resolve your issue:

  • Do not factory reset any Sonos speaker or component
  • Run a Diagnostic and make note of the Reference ID (Do not post it in the community)
  • Call Sonos Tech Support to review the data

I don’t know how long this step will be required as Sonos may decide to make “Improved Navigation”  a default 🤔

** Upon a new installation and/or update of the App the service is defaulted to Sonos Radio

Hi @AjTrek1

Thanks for sharing your tips!

As a proof to Step 2 in my original post. The App showed all Sonos Radio as “Unable to load content” (see below)

As suggested… stopping the app and restarting it resolved the issue (see below)

I rest my case 😂. Seriously, every case may be different but following simple steps first may save frustration and save time. Enjoy your Sonos!

Try Airplane mode ON/OFF next time, before restarting App, (step 0), this will reset network, and reestablish any stale sessions to cloud services.

Try Airplane mode ON/OFF next time, before restarting App, (step 0), this will reset network, and reestablish any stale sessions to cloud services.

Hmmm...Step 0 🤔...let’s see…

On my iPhone (Step 0)

  1. Open Sonos App to discover the issue
  2. Swipe down (at angle) from upper right corner of iPhone
  3. Engage Airplane mode
  4. Disengage Airplane mode
  5. Open Sonos App to see results

On my iPhone (In Step 2)

  1. Open Sonos app to discover the issue
  2. Swipe up to stop the app
  3. Re-open Sonos app to see results

I’m just saying….😎

I didn’t post the thread for creating Apple shortcuts. It was posted for Sonos. Just a few basic steps regarding the Sonos app. Creating shortcuts is great if that’s what one wants to do. In this case I wanted to stick to the subject matter to which the Sonos community is about. I’m at least 99.9% confident that if an OP called Sonos Tech support they wouldn’t suggest creating an Apple shortcut…then again stranger things have occurred 😎

BTW…utilizing an Apple Shortcut is not a Step 0; unless one can mentally will the action. But then again by my way of thinking physical or mental it’s still a Step 😎

I’m not suggesting they would. My suggestion was to restart the network on the controller device, simply by toggling Airplane mode, before attempting anything more drastic like restarting applications, rebooting phone, restarting shared network devices that others in household maybe using etc.

In your specific case above, “unable to load content”, toggling Airplane mode would have more than likely resolved if there was no service outage, which is why I suggested try it next time this happens. If it happens often, then iOS shortcut can do it very quickly, if multiple taps is an issue.

I guess you’re not getting my point. Granted your suggestion may work as well. My intent was to provide information on how to Troubleshoot the Sonos App using the tools that are germane to it regardless of iOS or Android device. You’ve taken the thread in another direction about an iPhone and creating Apple Shortcuts. Quite frankly your suggestion depends in whether or not a person who owns an iPhone is familiar with Apple Shortcuts. Trust me on this…many aren’t.

Basic troubleshooting steps are designed to be as generic as possible. They don't focus on shortcuts for a specific product when multiple devices of different OS can utilize them. The suggestion of creating a shortcut IMO for the purpose of this thread was akin to telling someone don’t bother learning how to multiply numbers just buy a calculator.

While your suggestion does have merit IMO it would have been better placed in a thread specific to iOS devices.  BTW…I do realize that Airplane mode is not device specific. However, moving to another area of a device was not my intention as I wanted to stay on message regarding the Sonos App itself.

OK, forget I mentioned Apple Shortcuts, if its not useful for you. Other iOS users that search and find this post may find it useful.

My suggestion is generic, to reset client network (ie toggle AirPlane mode) *before* anything else. Airplane mode is not specific to iOS, it applies to Windows, Android, etc. This generic solution will have solved the specific issue you posted above, “Unable to load content”, if there was no service outage at the time you got the error. The reason I mentioned iOS shortcuts is I know you use iOS, you posted about a specific error, and you highlighted the steps to toggle Airplane mode were possibly a few more than you would like.

OK…😂

I use shortcuts as well so no argument about their value in certain situations. To be honest I hadn’t thought about creation of a shortcut to reset the network. However, in this instance my intent was to stay generic as possible to laser focus on the Sonos App. I just didn’t want to veer off message in any direction even if I had thought of Airplane mode toggling I wouldn’t have mentioned it.

All said…great debate. I’ll see (read) you in the community 😎
