Hi. When playing Spotify on one device (e.g. Sonos Connect), then switching to my Sonos One pair, I can see in the app that the music has switched to the Ones and it shows as playing, but there is 30 seconds of silence.  Then (if not using shuffle), it skips to playing the next track in the queue on the Ones, however the app shows the 'now playing' song as being the track after that one.  So the track that's shown in the app as playing, isn't the one that's coming out of the speakers.  This happens for either of the following:

1. Using the Spotify app to change the device to Sonos One speakers that are in a group
2. Using Alexa to move the music to the Sonos One speakers (not in a group)

 

If the Sonos One speakers aren't in a group and I use Spotify app to change device then it works fine.

 

Any help would be appreciated.

I use Spotify as my main music service when playing to my speakers and cast to my speakers with the Spotify app so I was able to try this but swapping groups doesn’t give a long silence or skip to the next song. The issues you’ve described are generally symptoms of interference, so I would suggest reading our article on reducing wireless interference.

From your post it seems that you’ve used Spotify and Alexa to group/swap speakers, but not the Sonos app. I would suggest trying with the Sonos app to see if you experience the silence or playlist skipping as well. You can also hold the Play/Pause button on the speakers to group or ungroup them, so I would recommend grouping with that button and checking if you still have the same issues.

If using the Sonos app or speaker buttons don’t cause any issues, then I would recommend rebooting your network and Sonos system but also making sure you meet our system requirements. If you still have issues when also using the Sonos app, then please submit a diagnostics and reach out to our support team for further assistance, as they have the necessary tools available to troubleshoot this with you.

I’ve been experiencing the exact same thing for a while now. The Sonos player I switch to will typically skip 2-3 songs and show that one in “Now Playing” but actually play the song after the previously played one. I can also force this behaviour by moving the time in the track by a few seconds while nothing is playing on the speaker after having switched the selected player…

 

Did you manage to resolve this issue? I have no other issues with my Sonos system but use Spotify Connect pretty much all the time so this is quite annoying.

No progress unfortunately. I tried the steps above by @Jamie A but the issue remained. I've submitted diagnostics but haven't got round to calling support yet. Once I do if there's workaround/fix I'll let you know.


I’ve been encountering the same issue for close to two years but never got to the bottom of it. It’s also very hard to tell if this issue might be lying with Sonos, Spotify or both. 


Indeed this issue has been around for a while now.. I’ve just tested with other Spotify Connect speakers and there are no issues so I believe this is a Sonos problem.

The easiest way I have found to reproduce this is by playing a song on the Spotify app on “This Device” then selecting a Sonos device, going back to “This Device” then reselecting the Sonos device. This results in no audio coming out of the Sonos device yet the now playing screen says something is playing and the current track time is moving. Scrubbing the track will then results in it skipping 2-3 songs and displaying the wrong “Now Playing” (while playing something else).

I have asked someone else to test this on a different Sonos system and the issue occurs too so I doubt it’s anything related to my network. Could @Granited and @florian365 maybe test to confirm this too?

It would be great if someone from Sonos could confirm/look into this as this typically affect switching from one Sonos speaker to the other (as the OP mentioned) resulting in no audio playing, and defeats the main selling point of a muti-room sound system imo. I also much prefer using the Spotify app compared to the Sonos app (and I know most people will agree). However - this doesn’t always happen which is why I detailed another way to consistently reproduce the issue (I believe it only happens when the speaker you’re switching to had previously been used with Spotify connect).


Adding to the above - when a Sonos device was recently streaming from Spotify Connect it will show as the below image. Clicking “End Session” before re-connecting to that device via Spotify Connect ensures that the issue doesn't occur.

Obviously not a fix but confirms even more that this is a Sonos issue.

 


I can confirm that switching between Spotify Connect speakers in my Sonos system is a big pain. After switching devices, the spotify timeline keeps moving on but the new respective target speaker stays silent. It is very fiddly and annoying to have to switch back and forth devices multiple times, or press play/pause multiple times or skip songs for it to work and be back in synch again. I have tried all sorts of things to try and solve this on a hardware perspective. New router, LAN connection to my Sonos speakers, set up everything completely from scratch multiple times etc. I even moved flats with a new Internet provider over the two years where the issue has been happening persistently. When I am at a different house with a differnt Sonos speaker system I do not encounter these issues. For me it’s only in my own flat with my own Sonos speaker system. Almost as if something with the speakers I have at home would be defective.

+1 on this. Very attentive of you to notice that. You can reconstruct this one time “fix” within the Spotify app if you press the three dot menu of the respective speaker and dismiss/forget it (see screenshot). After that it will reliably work for exactly one time and then after that not anymore. Seems like the “session” that Spotify spins up in the Sonos system seems to be involved in causing the issue.
