I have 4 x Play:1s and am getting fed up with the workarounds I have to use to play my own music. I know Play:1 isn;t compatible with Airplay per se, but I thought there might be a way of getting to work if I add a 5th, more recent Sonos device to the group. Is this is true, and iso, could somebody advise on the cheapest/easiest way of doing this? Thank you

It is correct that you will need a newer speaker on your network in order to use Airplay with your Play 1s.
The Era 100 is on sale right now, and that is the speaker I would recommend for you to get the functionality you desire.
While the Play 1 is an incredible sounding speaker, its age limits it from having the functionality of newer speakers.

Thank you for this - but just to confirm (as I am not remotely techy!), it will be quite easy to add this Era 100 to my set and then it will enable Airplay across all of the Play1 speakers (including playing music individually through them?) Thank you
+17Yes. Follow the instructions here:

Then all you need to do is begin playing a son to the Era 100 via Airplay, then in the Sonos app, group the speakers you want to send audio to.
If you are determined not to use the app for most things, then you can create a group that will always play when you Airplay to the 100.
For me, I just use the app for everything, then there is no need to jump back and forth.
I have Apple Music, Amazon Music, Pandora and my Local Library that are controlled through the app exclusively
If you are not overally invested in SONOS and wanted airplay I would go with another system. I started with SONOS quite a few years ago when they didn't have much competition. With time I have dealing with the app to be aggravating and done almost everything by airplay and still getting aggravated with Sonos. Sonia seems to always want to update when I don't have time to deal with it. Problems getting different sound on different speakers. Speakers disappearing from the app but still showing available by airplay.

I’m not trying to be argumentative, but OP is not having connection issues with the app. From what I have read the issue is with Airplay and older speakers. This is an opportunity to help and not attempt to steer a user away from Sonos because of issues YOU are having with connectivity. Adding a newer model speaker is the solution if OP chooses to continue using Airplay. Apple Music through the Sonos App is simpler IMO.

thanks everybody. To confirm… which app I should be using for my iPhone and mac for Airplay??? I thought the gold one was ‘old’ but when I click on the ‘download app’ for mac on on my mac laptop, it keeps giving me the gold one. Then I gather’s a black one and a black 'S1’ one - which do I need?? Thank you
