Just suddenly this week, my Mac Studio cannot connect to my Era300+mini-sub (Office Sonos). It’s worked for me the past three years, but now won’t connect with AirPlay.

Through Apple Music, when I attempt to connect, I get the message:
The AirPlay device “Office Sonos” cannot be selected for audio output. Please verify your network settings and AirPlay configuration or select another device.

The Office Sonos speaker displays a greyed-out checkbox.

Here’s what’s odd:
1. I can connect through my Mac Apple Music to all of my other Sonos speakers.
2. The Mac Sonos app works perfectly and connects to the Era300.
3. The Mac Sound tool also cannot connect to it.
4. Apple Music connects on both my iPhone 15 and iPad Pro.
5. macOS is Sequoia 15.5 (24F74)

What I’ve tried:
1. Unplugged my router and restarted.
2. Shut down my Mac and restarted.
3. Unplugged both the Era300 and the min-sub.

Other note: the Era300 is connected to Ethernet, but that has no effect when I use WiFi only.

My question is, why can’t my Mac OS (not the Sonos app) connect via AirPlay anymore?

What do you suggest?

Have you have updated yours OS's?

@W.Robinson

Have you tried updating the speakers, to ensure that this one wasn’t missed in a recent update? On the Mac app it’s Sonos → Check for Updates. On the mobile app it’s Settings - General Settings - System Updates - Check for Updates.

Can you still Airplay to it from your phone?

And if you have, and it still isn’t working, I would recommend that you submit a system diagnostic within 10 minutes of experiencing this problem, and call Sonos Support to discuss it. Don’t post the resulting diagnostic number here, they get sensitive about GDPR.

There may be information included in the diagnostic that will help Sonos pinpoint the issue and help you find a solution.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

leo07—Yes, all of my OS and devices are running current versions.

+18—Yes, there are no updates. However, when I select these specific speakers (Era300, Move 2) from the AirPlay icon in Mac Apple Music, it says “Office Sonos Updating...” After about 3-4 seconds, the message disappears, and I receive the Apple Music pop-up: “Could not connect to Office Sonos.” “The AirPlay device “Office Sonos” cannot be selected for audio output. Please verify your network settings and AirPlay configuration or select another device.” I get the same errors when trying to connect to my Move 2 speaker. My Arc+sub, Play 5+sub connect fine.

Both Era300+mini and my Move 2 speakers (2 paired) work flawlessly with the Mac Sonos app and all other Apple devices (Apple Music and Sonos apps).

I will be contacting Sonos Support.

@W.Robinson please keep us updated. The Airplay functionality of my whole system, except for Roams, has been broken for years now and I haven’t been able to resolve it.

I suspect it has something to do with the routing between my home network and the SonosNet.

You probably should not be using SonosNet at this point, so many Sonos speakers don’t support it any longer. Better to hang all your Sonos off of WiFi, or wire them directly. SonosNet only works on speakers that are several generations older. Certainly not your Roams, for instance.

I still use a mixed system, though. Some of my older speakers connect via SonosNet from my BOOST, but all the ‘newer’ devices connect directly to my WiFi.

FWIW (but I haven’t tested it today), my AirPlay 2 works fine, from my iPhone. I’m not at home currently to test, from either iPhone odor Mac, though.

Can I have a vid of your issue?

OK, I worked with Sonos support. The speakers are working correctly. The diagnostics showed no problems with my system. The agent was knowledgeable and pleasant. It all came down to an Apple AirPlay problem on my Mac Studio, and they advised me to contact Apple.

I called Apple, and they fixed it in three minutes.

System Preferences > General > AirDrop & Handoff > Allow AirPlay for > Everyone

I have never messed with this option. It was set to Current User. “Is this a recent change?” I asked. The agent replied, “Yes, it is.”

All is good for now.
