My current music library is stored on a WD My Passport and requires to be connected to my computer all the time for me to access my music on my SONOS speakers which is a real pain. Is it worth investing in a home networked device (NAS drive) if so does anyone have any suggestions of what to look for. My computer uses windows 11.
I use a Synology NAS that has worked flawlessly for me. It has all my movies and audio files, along with backups for all my Apple devices. I recommend the brand.
Yes….investing in a NAS is a much better solution.
I use a 4 Bay_UGreen DXP4800 with dual 2.5GB ethernet ports. Other specs include:
- Intel N100 Quad-core CPU
- 8GB DDR5 RAM
- 32G eMMC,
- 2 * M.2 NVMe Slots
- 4K HDMI
There is also a 2-Bay model with a single 2.5GB Ethernet port sans 4K HDMI port
Below is an AI generated comparison of UGreen vs Synology; as the latter is the market leader by reputation. Other links can be found there as well.
In the end do your research regarding reputation, features, price, stability and your needs. Also, know that not all NAS devices are compatible with every HD or M.2 drive on the market. Visit their website to know which drives will work in their unit as it will impact your buying decision relating to price as well; independent of the price for the NAS device.

In addition to the above HD’s besides having different storage capacities also have speed differences. Standard drive speed is 5200 RPM. More expensive drives are 7200 RPM. The latter obviously having better read/write speeds.
