Hi @Slates149, what you describe should work. That said, many of us find the Windows desktop app more reliable (and easier to navigate) when it comes to adding local library music.
If you’ve not already done so, install the Windows desktop app here:
https://support.sonos.com/en-us/downloads
If you already have the Windows desktop app installed, make sure it is updated to the latest version. After you add the local library in the Windows desktop app, it should appear in the iOS/Android app. If it does not appear, verify that you are signed into your Sonos account on the iOS/Android app.
Hope this helps!
Thank you! I have downloaded the Sonos app for Windows via that link but I’m not sure how to check if it’s the latest version. As it is, it says it’s found my Sonos system but can’t connect!! The Firewall settings are all correct.
So I cannot add the Misic Library that way either
Hi @Slates149, is your local library stored on a USB thumb drive plugged into your Wi-Fi router? If yes, it may be the old SMBv1, which is no longer supported by Sonos. If you tell me the make and model of your Wi-Fi router I may be able to verify if that is the problem.
Hi @press250
Thank you again for reaching out.
No, it’s an external HDD ( Hitachi XL1000 1TB USB 2.0 ) plugged directly into my BT SMART HUB 2 Router.
Does it matter that all my music tracks are in separate folders or do they need to be just there as numerous individual music files?
The system worked fine on the old Sonos app and on a earlier generation BT HUB
If I could just get the Sonos Windows App that I downloaded from that link to connect to my system I think I’d crack it but as I said, it finds the system but won’t connect to it
The BT Smart Hub unfortunately uses SMB v1, which the speakers no longer support on S2 code. What Sonos equipment do you have?
Hi @Ian_S
That would explain things!
I have Play 1 and Play 3’s
I note the following alert from Sonos:
Alerts:
- Sonos systems no longer support local library shares that use SMBv1 / HTTP. If your library was shared with Sonos using one of these older protocols, you can add it back to Sonos by manually sharing your music folder using SMBv2 or SMBv3, then adding it back to your system using the Sonos app for macOS or Windows.
I have no idea how to ‘manually share my music folder using SMBv2 or SMBv3 then add it back to my system using the Sonos app for Windows’
Additionally, I am struggling to connect my system via the Windows app too. The app locates the system but doesn’t connect.
The system is working pretty well with the new IOS app by the way. There are the odd annoyances but generally is OK so I don’t want to do anything to tip that the opposite way!
Any assistance and instructions are welcome
From a BT router, as it stands today, you can no longer share your music to a SONOS S2 system.
Given that you have Play 1’s and 3’s, another option is to ‘downgrade’ to the older Sonos S1 ecosystem which *will* still connect to your music from the BT router.
https://support.sonos.com/en-gb/article/downgrade-a-sonos-product-to-s1
If you want to stick with S2, you’ll either have to just use streaming services, share the music from a PC/laptop (which obviously needs to be on when listening to music), or buy a dedicated NAS drive that supports at least SMB v2. (All new NAS drives available today should do this)
Hi @Slates149
Welcome to the Sonos Community! And, I’m sorry to hear of the issues you’ve had with getting Music Library to work on your Sonos system.
My colleague Marco has written a new guide that should help you with connecting to your Windows PC to use instead:
You will of course need to connect your USB drive to your Windows PC first.
I hope this helps.
Hi @Corry P
I first need the Sonos Windows App to connect to my system!
It locates it but refuses to connect even with the Firewall configured for Sonos
A guide to solve this would also be useful.
BTW - the new iOS Sonos controller app is working well with my system and I don’t want to jeopardise that!
Hi @Slates149
If your Desktop controller will not connect, there’s a fair chance that the PC thinks your network connection is to a public network, rather than to a private one.
Please see this Microsoft guide for help.
There isn’t much that you can do with the Desktop app that would affect the iOS app - there’s no need to worry about that.
I hope this helps.
Hi @Corry P
Nope - that didn’t work.
I give up with trying to connect my system via the Sonos Windows app AND trying to add my Music Library back
I’ve been at it all yesterday evening and this morning and it’s just pointless
Sonos have a lot to answer for frankly. Everything worked fine at one point, not anymore and it’s frustrating, annoying and frankly tiring trying to sort
Try temporarily disabling any Antivirus software you have running on the PC. Sometimes it can be over zealous.
Hi @Slates149
I understand your frustration. I recommend you get in touch with our technical support team who have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your Sonos system and what it reports - they are also able to remotely connect to your computer in order to set things up for you.
I hope this helps.
Hi @Ian_S
Well, well. That did it Ian. As simple as that.
I now have the system added to the Sonos Windows app.
Tried again to add Music Library (noting the SMB version issue you advised) and nothing.
so I have given up on my music library and will just use streaming services
thank you
@Ian_S
Mind you, the minute I re-enable my firewall, I loose connection to the system
What AV software is it?
@Corry P Can you help with the ports that Sonos needs to open here?
@Ian_S
AVG Internet Security
Avg lets you add an application to its allowed/blocked list, so for an application you trust you can tell avg to allow it to do what it wants.
https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlname=use-avg-antivirus-blocked-allowed-apps
It’s the same idea as the Windows allow/block list they use with applications to control application access on private/public/domain network firewalls without having to manage individual ports specific to an application and the exclude settings in their Defender AV.
Hi @Ian_S & @Slates149
Please see @sigh’s answer for AVG, but there is additional information here:
https://support.sonos.com/en-gb/article/configure-your-firewall-to-work-with-sonos
I hope this helps.
After weeks of frustration I found a shorter simpler way that worked for me(from my desktop)
- Find your music library on you computer
- Right click it
- in the dropdown menu, select “Give access to...”
- Select “specific people”
- In the box type “Sonos”
- click the down arrow in the box
- it will show “Sonos Wireless HiFi Systems
- Highlight it and click “Add”
- Done
