I have just been listening to a playlist on Spotify that I selected via Sonos. It was awful, with lots of suddenly ending and skipped tracks. I stopped and closed my Sonos app and opened a Spotify app to connect to my Sonos system and play the same playlist. I am now enjoying the playlist with no interruptions and no skips. Why……?????

The Spotify App was probably playing/streaming from your mobile device direct to your speaker, whereas the Sonos App is not a player/streaming App, it’s a controller and the music selected streams from the Spotify servers direct to your Sonos speaker.
My own initial thoughts are you may have local network interference, so perhaps start your troubleshooting with this link to try to resolve the issue seen:
