Is creating a group the only way to play something in multiple rooms?

I have 3 speakers in 3 different rooms. Most times I only want to listen to the speaker in the room I am in but there are times where I may want to play speaker 1 and 2, or 1 and 3, or 2 and 3, etc. It seems like I have to create a group and then delete it if I want to play on different combinations of speakers. These are S2 speakers that are downgraded to S1. Ideally, I would like to play something on a speaker and then check and uncheck other speakers as desired.

You do not need to save rooms as a group. You can group/ungroup rooms on the fly:

I’m not convinced that what you’re thinking of ‘grouping’ is the same thing as most of us do. It’s a relatively easy thing to do, following the instructions at https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/group-and-ungroup-rooms

It is really designed to be done and undone at a moment’s notice. Takes less than five seconds to press the buttons.

Only create groups if you want to save a configuration.  On the fly grouping can be done from the group screen, accessible via the grouping icon (little rounded square with a triangle at the bottom) found on the Now Playing screen or on each room in the Rooms selection screen.
