A numerical number representing the volume % is one of my most used and basic of features that is completely missing in this new Sonos App update. How could this happen?

Agree. It's a mystery what the intent of that change might be. Perhaps to encourage use of voice assistants.
Not everyone is able to use a voice assistant. If you live in a “noisy” household, these assistants are useless.
