Not sure if it’s a bug or a feature request, but when I open my Sonos iOS app the “now playing” song metadata is always behind (showing the prior song). A small gripe since it takes a second or two to refresh and get caught up. Why can’t the app just update this metadata in the background all the time if music is playing? FWIW I don’t have this lag with Apple Music or Spotify apps.
Sounds like there’s a slight possibility of a network delay involved. Remember that the speakers are reaching on ti the stream, then reporting what is playing to your controller. When you’re using the ‘native’ apps, like Apple Music or Spotify, the data is coming straight to your device, and then being pushed (presumably) to your speakers, which is one less ‘step’.
That being said, the amount of ‘delay’ shouldn’t be noticeable. While it does exist due to physics, it should be so slight that you’re not noticing it.
My working theory is that the Sonos speakers are having difficulty, albeit slight, in communicating correctly to your controller. The speakers are getting the stream themselves, and supposed to then be telling the controller what they’re doing.
My initial thought is some slight wifi interference . If those solutions don’t help, I’d try a full network refresh, by powering off all Sonos devices as well as the device your controller is running on, then reboot the router. Wait a couple of minutes for the router to come up, then power back on your Sonos devices and the device you’re running the controller on, wait another couple of minutes for them to reconnect, then test.
But, if none of this helps, I would recommend that you submit a system diagnostic within 10 minutes of experiencing this problem, and call Sonos Support to discuss it. Don’t post the resulting diagnostic number here, they get sensitive about GDPR.
There may be information included in the diagnostic that will help Sonos pinpoint the issue and help you find a solution.
When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.
