My Sonos library sits on my NAS (a QNAP device) in a subfolder:

192.168.1.163//Multimedia/Music

This Music Library shows up perfectly well in my Sonos app and I can play music happily from it.

My source Music library sits on my Windows laptop, managed by iTunes.  I exported my playlists to “library.xml” as described in this article on Apple’s support site

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/itunes/itns2998/windows

I copied “library.xml” to the Music folder above, so it’s at the same level as artist folders, but not in a folder itself.

I then re-indexed my library, but when I look at “Imported Playlists” within “Music Library” in any Sonos app (iOS, Windows, macOS) it’s empty.

Can anyone advise where I’m going wrong?

Many thanks,

Chris

Hello @shed53, welcome back!

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues viewing your Imported Playlists within your Music Library on the Sonos App.

There are many things than can cause this, such as configuration settings, permissions etc. I would suggest you to Submit Diagnostics and reach out to our Support Team for live troubleshooting.

They have tools at their disposal to provide you with advice and information specific to your Sonos system and what it reports and can also guide you through all the steps to resolve your issue.

I hope this helps.

Thanks @Sotiris C. — I did raise a query with Sonos and they talked me through a resolution. I’ll document it below.

In case anyone encounters a similar issue…

The resolution for me (Music library copied from where iTunes controls it to a NAS) was to:

  • remove the music library from Sonos
  • re-export the library XML file from iTunes
  • rename the XML file from “library.xml” to “iTunes Music Library.xml” (I don’t know if this was necessary or not, but the advisor suggested doing it, just in case)
  • copy the new library XML file to the NAS copy of the music library
  • add the music library back into Sonos
  • wait for it to reindex, et voila!

Good luck anyone who encounters this problem.

Disclaimer — I have no idea if this problem occurs if Sonos directly uses your iTunes music library or, if it does, that this would resolve it.
