So some files that I have on my PC won’t play. Sonos scans them for a few seconds then moves on to the next file. It will then skip the entire album track by track. Thought it was file format but happens on MP3s as well as lossless. It’s consistent, ie certain albums just won’t play. VLC plays them fine. The Sonos device was connected to router via Ethernet in case of Wi-Fi issues. I stress, most albums play fine.  I also have a NAIM streamer on Ethernet into a router and this has no such problems. It’s getting more common as time goes on with latest albums. Is it likely to be because these are higher res mp3? The devices in question are play one and three, about 10 years old.

The tracks that Sonos would not play for me were tracks with an apostrophe in the track name.  It has to be a specific type of apostrophe character to cause this issue.  Looking at it carefully you can see a slight difference in the angle of the character.  My eyes ain’t what they used to be so others may have better luck telling the difference.

 
If a track refuses to play and it has an apostrophe in the track name just replace the guilty apostrophe with the one on your keyboard.

It has been years since I ripped my CD collection but there were several problem characters that Sonos barfed on.

Since it is the recently ripped files that have issues, check the exact file format that your ripper is using.

Is it likely to be because these are higher res mp3? The devices in question are play one and three, about 10 years old.

All MP3 files should play.  The highest bit rate an MP3 can be is 320 kbps.  Compare that with the 1,141 kbps bit rate of CD .  The Sample Rate is 44.1kHz same as CD.  I see no reason those files would not play.

high-res usually refers to files that have a sample rate and or bit depth higher than Red Book CD ( 16/44.1 ) and MP3.  Sonos will play 24/48 files ( Some 24/48 WAV files fail to play ).  All FLAC files at that resolution should work.

if your MP3 files refuse to play there is some other reason other than file type.
