Duplicate album names cause one of them to be repeated

I have TWO albums titled ‘Crash’ (DMB and movie soundtrack). Indexing gives me three albums, with TWO copies of the soundtrack along with the DMB album.

 

I have FOUR albums titled ‘Unplugged’ (Alice in Chains, Alicia Keys, Eric Clapton and Wind Machine).  Indexing gives me seven albums: AiC, EC, WM, and FOUR copies of Alicia Keys.

 

In both cases the duplicates are identical with respect to tracks, artists, etc.

 

I got around the problem by changing the album titles, using ‘Crash (soundtrack)’ for one and ‘(artist name) Unplugged’ for the others.

 

But this seems buggy and unnecessary.  Any ideas as to why the duplicates in the first place?

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having issues with duplicate albums in your library.

Generally, seeing duplicates is because of the metadata, such as complication albums showing a duplicate for each singer/artist in the album. They albums you’ve listed aren’t this style, so unless the metadata is incorrect, I wouldn’t see why they are being duplicated.

While there is the workaround you’ve found, I agree it shouldn’t be necessary. I would recommend reaching out to our support team for further assistance, as they have the necessary tools to look into your system and music library and help you troubleshoot this.

Before following up, I decided to go back to square one:  remove the duplicate albums (DMB + AiC, EC, and WM), leaving only the albums that were erroneously duplicated (‘Crash’ by Mark Isham and ‘Unplugged’ by Alicia Keys).  Then I reindexed to make sure everything was clean for those albums (ignore the ‘Unknown album’...legit and totally unrelated):

Then I added back the duplicates (‘Crash’ by Dave Matthews Band and three ‘Unplugged’ by Alice in Chains, Eric Clapton, and Wind Machine respectively), leaving their original album titles, and reindexed again.  The duplicates came back (but only three Alicia Keys this time):

Weird:  if I select any one of the duplicate album titles and ‘Replace queue’, the queue is populated with all the songs from all the albums of the same name, in order by artist name - but only one copy of each song. Here are just snips of the relevant queues:

End of first Unplugged and beginning of second, after ‘Replace Queue’

Also weird:  no Artist listed with the Alicia Keys album in the queue.

Anyone with duplicate album titles NOT having this issue?  FWIW my music is stored on a Synology server.  Thanks!
