Anyone else noticed how slow and unresponsive the App has become today Dec 23rd 2024?

Much worse than the usual sluggish performance we have become used to.

  • android App Randomly losing connection with the players
  • More than 20 seconds to pick up what’s playing

and before anyone jumps in ,  no its not my network , these are ethernet connected devices and I have a strong Internet service 70mb/s with no competing web traffic.

If prior years problems are anything to go by I am not looking forward to entertaining guests on the 25th as new users plug in their sonos gifts for the first time and try to register.

Please Sonos ditch this Cloud based App solution and give us back direct control of our own equipment.

Given up trying g to use their app and control directly via Spotify or Google home. You wonder what the beta testers were doing…

Networks are continually changing, that’s their design. There is no ‘static’ network. And your ‘internet speed’ is a measure of the connection between your router and the outside world, and has almost nothing to do with the speed of the devices to your router.

Networks are subject to outside influences as well, not only ‘inside the network’ stuff, as noted by the data in the wifi interference FAQ.  I certainly have experienced this, with a new neighbor setting up a WiFi device using the same channel as I was using, as well as receiving more transitory interference from an old microwave, that was ‘leaking’ RF while operating.

Much as any electronic device, routers are also sensitive to power fluctuation. Were I to hazard a guess, your router may have handed out bad IP addresses the last time your Sonos rebooted, and requested a new IP during the last firmware update.

Fairly easy to fix, at least temporarily, by unplugging all Sonos devices, then rebooting the router, waiting a couple of minutes, then plugging back in your Sonos. Not only does this have the benefit of refreshing the router, but the Sonos OS as well as getting new IPs. Of course, if you prefer the more ‘permanent’ solution, you can check your router’s manual and set up reserved IP addresses in the router.

Pushed to release a substandard release to keep new products shipping

Whilst I agree networks can be complex and a lot is hidden this is not an explanation for my issue.

Firstly the components are connected via ethernet not wifi ,  secondly I was sitting with the controller next to the router and hence wifi interference is unlikely (and I do regularly check for wifi interference and I use wireshark to review what’s going through the router).  There were no unusual conditions on the day , all other apps responded normally and the router was not overloaded or busy with other traffic.

I only referred to the ISP connection speed in my original post as I understand that the sonos code utilises cloud connections far more than it used to and, when I tested other internet applications, I did not notice any performance problems with any other ISP connected traffic.
