Changing Music Library groupings on Android

I have a music library on a NAS. When I first connected it to my Sonos system I mistakenly selected the group by artist option. Where I have albums which feature tracks by different artists the library lists them all individually rather than as one album. I would like to change the groupings so it is by album.

I use the Android app and under Settings - Music Library the only option is rescan library. There is no option to change the ordering. I found a help page which implied there should be an option asking which ordering I want. Where do I find this option?

Hi @Phantom_cyclist

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Sorry to hear about the issue you are having with Music Library sorting. At present, the option you reference is only available on iOS controllers (and the Desktop controllers). It is not presently available on Android.

Assuming you have a desktop computer and not an iOS device, please install/open the Sonos Desktop Controller for your computer and find the option in Menu bar » Manage » Music Library Settings » Advanced » Group Albums Using.

I hope this helps.

For me, on Android, I just select the Music Library from the App main page. There I’m presented with a list of options, Artists, Albums, Composers and several more as well as a “by folder” view.

Same from the Sonos web controller.

I think that is the way to select music from the library. When I initially scanned the library for content I thought that there was a set of options to 'sort' music in different ways. I thought this was why I have, for example, a set of 10 albums all called 10 greatest hits each with one of the 10 tracks on the album as each track is by a different artist, rather than one album which has 10 tracks (which incidentally are by different artists).

Easy enough to delete the library link, add it back and rescan, been too long since I messed with mine to recall.

Maybe something here?

I tried that but maybe I need to reboot the system with no music library before adding again and rescanning.

I have had issues with indexing in the past.  I used MP3Tag to check the details were in the tags correctly and chose a common format for all the music I have and added artwork to the tracks rather than just the folder.

I fixed it by changing the library to scan an empty folder and then after that I re-scanned the original folder and all was good.  Not sure this is needed now but it can’t do any harm to try.

Thank you for the suggestion to use the Desktop Controller.  There seem to be two.  The brown square one has a ‘Group Albums Using’ option with options ‘iTunes Compilations’, Album Artists or Do not Group Compilations.  If I change the selection to Album Artists an Updating The Music library message appears and after a while disappears.  Looking in the Music library there is no change - I still have 10 entries labelled !0 greatest Hits each containing one track as each track on the album is by a different artist.  I have checked the files using Mp3tag and all the tracks have the same Album tag.  The Album Artist tag is empty but even if I copy the artist tag in the Album Artist tag and update the music library I still get the 10 one track albums listed.

I lost my music library and this a fresh one but I am sure that my old library had the various artist albums lusted as a single album rather than multiple albums.

Maybe there it is a tagging issue that I have yet to discover.

Hi @Phantom_cyclist

I am sorry to hear that the Group Albums Using setting did not help with the issue you are having. So that we can investigate this issue, I recommend you get in touch with our technical support team who have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your Sonos system and what it reports.

Having said that, it does sound like it might be a tagging issue, as @bockersjv suggests. Ensuring the Album Artist tag says “Various Artists” for every track would be the place to start, I think. Either way, our agents should be able to assist you directly with this issue.

I hope this helps.
