Can I name a Room Group

Hi, I own a hotel and have several separate groups of speakers in different parts of the hotel all running on the same SSID .

This works ok, but the staff have to usually select ‘switch system’ in the morning as the iPads dont seem to stay connected to the group of speakers that was selected previously when they arrive to work in the morning. 
When you select switch system you get a list of ‘Rooms’ with the different number of speakers beside the room number.  This mixes up daily so the order the list is in changes so making it difficult for the staff to identify what ‘Room’ relates to what area as some of them have the same number of speakers . Is there a way to name the ‘Rooms’?

online articles says there is but when I try it, it seems to relate to the speakers not the ‘Rooms’

The Ones are indeed capable of running either S1 or S2, but not both at the same time. Your other speakers require S2, so the Ones should be set up with S2, just so all speakers can be on the same system. 
 

In order to change a room name in S2, go to settings, then select the current name of the room. At the top of the resulting screen, you’ll see ‘Name’, with the room name in it. Click on that name ( as you’ll see, there is a carat at the end of that field indications that if you click on it, you’ll be taken to a new page). This is where  can select that data and change it as desired. Either with predefined data, which is below, or type your own data there. Make certain to click on return on your keyboard in order to change the name.

Do you have products that only S1 and not S2. Those are different systems. 

Different systems also means that they may have different email addresses.

Please advise.

I have sonos one’s which should be compatible with S1 and S2 and an ARC, sub gen 3 and ERA 100’s

First lets define Sonos terminology…

  1. A single speaker, two speakers in stereo pair or speakers in a home theater are called a “Room”
  2. The Sonos soundbar is the lead speaker in a home theater for which the room is named. Subs and Surrounds cease to exist as individual units and become part of the room named for the soundbar.
  3. Groups consists of multiple “Rooms” brought together that contain a single speaker, two speakers in stereo pair or speakers in a home theater
  4. Groups that share the same room cannot be active at the same time.

Your employees should not be selecting “Switch System” as that requires the “active” System to be forgotten and a “New” system be created. Groups created in one system do not transfer over to another system.

The cycle continues each time employees select “Switch System”


To create a Group do the following:

  • In the Sonos app you want to click the “Cog” wheel in the upper right corner of the home page of the app and select “Groups”. 

 

  • Next select:  + Create Group

 

  • Next you want to select the “Rooms” you want in the “Group” and give it a name.
  • Click Save.

 

  • I created two (2) groups as shown

 

  • Click the “Speaker Icon” in “Now Playing” area bottom right to see the Groups created.
  • Before selecting the “Group” deselect any “room” not associated with the group.
  • In this example “Patio” is not part of “Test Group 1”.

 

  • Now you may select your group. I have chosen Test Group 1.
  • If you refer back to the picture that shows “Create Group” (above) you’ll see that the rooms chosen for the Test Group 1 are the same.
  • Highlight the group you want to listen to music over
  • Click “Apply”.

 

  • In the “Now Playing” area (at bottom of screen) you’ll see the rooms selected for Test Group 1 are the same as were originally selected.

Groups are a somewhat loose set of speakers playing the same source. The speakers will ungroup when restarting, say after an update. Notator make it. Ore difficult to you, but Sonos speakers can also be put into “zones” that stay together after a restart.

Zones have their advantages, but may not work for everyone. Here’s more about them:
