I am getting Cannot be played - Encoding error on Apple Music Live Streams (Apple Music 1, Apple Music Hits/Club/Chill/Country).

It's not an error with the service (works in anything non-sonos such as iPhone, Mac and HomePod. It's not bandwidth or these wouldn’t play. Only these stations are causing problems.

Bug? Anyone at Sonos looking at it? Previous post mentioned an error on stream (if that was the case it wouldnt play on other devices surely?) or bandwidth, but I have a 1gbps connection, no other issues with any stream, atmos and lossless included, only these stations.

Saying that it works on other clients is misleading, they use a different source for the data, one that doesn’t include the SMAPI on the server. If the issue is with Sonos (doubtful, because other streams are playing without issue but not impossible), I would recommend that you submit a system diagnostic within 10 minutes of experiencing this problem, and call Sonos Support to discuss it. Don’t post the resulting diagnostic number here, their lawyers get sensitive about GDPR.

There may be information included in the diagnostic that will help Sonos pinpoint the issue and help you find a solution.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

But of course Sonos doesn’t have access to the Apple servers, they only point their client to where the data comes from. I suspect the issue is much more likely on Apple’s side, and you may need to contact them to get it cleared up.

API surely is a way of getting a url securely and with account. I doubt Apple host multiple streams and multiple ways of encoding. That would also go for the millions of tracks surely.
Either Apple use a format for live not supported by Sonos, or Sonos is misreading the api response for the live stream files surely.

not sure I can be bothered will just be passed about anyway. Problem with the integrations everyone can just pass it over to other side

Completely up to you, which is why I offered two separate methods of attempting to resolve the issue, one with each company.

Already tried to log with Sonos. Had to battle through ai. Couldn’t find a way of speaking to anyone. Thanks anyway. Bit of a waste of time - think just don’t use it probably better answer

Hello again @Stonesynchro

It seems playing radio is not going your way!

There are two likely causes for the issue you describe. Generally, a “not encoded correctly” error from a music service means that there has been a transmission error and the audio stream has been corrupted by interference or a bad connection.

In your case, as you have successfully played lossless and Dolby Atmos from Apple Music without issue (and because I have seen the diagnostics you sent for a separate issue), I believe you are affected by a current issue with playing some Live feeds from Apple Music that we are aware of and are investigating, along with Apple. We don't have an estimate for when it might be resolved, but I will update this thread when I hear of it.

In the meantime, you can stream to an iPhone/iPad (for example) and use Bluetooth or AirPlay to get the feed to your Sonos system. Or, you may want to try the non-live options available on Apple Music.

I hope this helps.
