As reported here:

apple music recently played not showing on apple music app after using sonos

Apple Music updates to Recently Played in the Sonos App remains an unreliable mess.

Has there been any progress on this matter?

Hi @ColinvZ

Looking into this, there hasn’t been any update since my last message in the previous thread. The workaround remains the same, where our team suggest using Airplay or Bluetooth to stream directly from the Apple Music app.

If you haven’t called into support about this issue, I would recommend doing so as it’ll create a case for you with this issue tagged to it: once the issue is resolved, you’ll receive a follow up email if you have an existing case.

Hi @Jamie A, Thanks for the response. I will submit a report but I am not holding my breath. In the previous thread the issue was reported six months ago. It does not appear to be a priority for Sonos.

The challenge may be, and I don’t know one way or the other, that it is an issue with Apple not sending the appropriate information for Sonos to display properly.  Which means at best, Sonos can report the case to Apple, and needs to rely on Apple to actually fix the data stream. Sonos themselves don’t have the ability to change what Apple’s server is sending them, they can only report the issue to Apple.  You may be more effective in directing your concern directly to Apple.

Hi @Airgetlam, thank you for taking the time to respond. As you say, “I don’t know one way or the other.” My understanding is that Sonos routes music selections through their server to monitor usage. They certainly know and display details of what is being played. My expectation is that this can inform playback history.

Unfortunately, Sonos has lost all goodwill due to their disastrous app implementation and it is difficult to assume that any other party is responsible for service failures given Sonos’ track record. Current unreliable alarms is another example.

If Apple was the party at fault Jamie could simply have said so, instead of suggesting that I submit a support case to receive an email once it is resolved (six months and counting).

Sonos never throws a partner under the bus.  Even when it is 100% the partner’s fault, Sonos plays neutral, with comments like “we will pass this along to the team”.  Very rarely do they point the finger at Apple, or any other partner, unless it is something Sonos has given up fixing due to OS rules, like hard button/lock screen controls, or playing music housed on a mobile device.

It is worth clarifying that there appears to be two issues.

Some users have reported Apple Music played via the Sonos app not updating their play history on Apple Music. I also experience this issue but do not really expect it to work.

The issue that I am reporting is that Apple Music played via the Sonos app does not consistently update Sonos’ own Recently Played list. (I am signed in as the system owner and can see other recently played items).

My own observations lead me to think there is frequently delayed processing on Apple’s side.

e.g. I have noticed frequently that the “Recently Added” list will lag behind what I’ve added in Apple Music. (I’ve actually also seen it differently on different Apple Devices, so there might sometimes be some synchronisation issues much more closer to home, as it were)

(As to the workaround, I’ve been having problems recently with AirPlay. But no one else is reporting that so it’s probably just something on my network)

Using AirPlay would be a workaround minus lossless and atmos options. Seeing as this was reported back in December with no further updates, I’m sure it isn’t a priority. Whereby it would be if it was a Spotify issue I’m sure! As more users

Are there? I don’t know where to look for Sonos usage statistics.

@Jamie A i have found what could have been causing this issue.

in the Apple Music app itself, you go into settings and Apple Music and it has a list of all apps that are authorised to use Apple Music. All the ones listed show up in last played when using them (Alexa, stats fm etc) but I noticed that Sonos is not on the list.

meaning there isn’t any way to sync what is being played across to the Apple servers, as it isn’t recognising the link between the two,

Just a thought

As you can see here, my Apple Music account is logged in and authorised on the Sonos app and across my devices.

@Daymo2007

From what device are you getting the first screen shot?

This is on the Apple Music settings menu inside the music app on iPhone

Isn’t Sonos the “Apple Music, Podcasts, and TV Web Player” entry? One sure way to test my claim, of course.

(Update on what I said above, about noticing long delays in synchronisation of the Apple Music Recently Added list: this continues)

But, to the original topic, I haven’t seen Apple’s Recently Played be updated back with what Sonos is playing directly for quite some time now. I would expect that’s a bug, or intentional changed behaviour, on Apple’s side as their systems obviously know/track what is being streamed: it’s not going to be the client (i.e. Sonos player) responsibility to report back what it has played.

So why would Apple not allow the stats to be shared when using Sonos devices? If I use the Alexa to play music, it shows what I have played, same as with airplay as it’s within device. I only would use the app for higher quality audio. It’s all very strange, and has been ongoing for over a year now.

Spotify was tested using the app and it updates a little slower, but it updates. Apple just isn’t sharing the info from Sonos.
