Hello

I received an e-mail from Sonos today about Apple Music lossless support. It says:

“Simply stream from Apple Music to a supported Sonos product. Over 100 million songs are available in lossless audio, with resolutions ranging from 16-bit/44.1 kHz (CD quality) up to 24-bit/192 kHz (hi-res)”

Does this mean that Sonos has increased its support to 24/192, with Apple Music?

Previously, it was limited to 24/48…

Thank you

Not likely. This is just poor communication by Sonos.

Agreed

But, would be great to get a definitive answer from Sonos

That’s pretty cool I look forward to listening up to 24/192. Good job new Sonos CEO. Hopefully more new features to come as well as the return of the many missing control features and stability cause the new app is a pos so far tbh.

The Sonos support page for Apple Music states “Stream hi-res audio (up to 24-bit, 48 kHz)

Hi @JFK1

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Apologies! That is indeed a miscommunication.

Sonos supports sampling rates of up to 48KHz, maximum.

I think someone literally copied the copy from Apple’s own pages, forgetting things were a little different when playing on Sonos devices.

I have flagged this internally - that email should not have gone out with that incorrect info on it!

I hope this helps.

The Sonos support page for Amazon Music is practically the same misleading info.

Amazon Music offers standard high-quality compressed audio (up to 320 kbps) to all listeners. Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers can enjoy the highest quality streaming audio, with access to over 75 millions songs in HD (lossless, 16-bit CD quality) or Ultra HD (lossless, 24-bit, up to 192 kHz).

Hi @Mr. T

Well spotted!

It says this at the top:

And then the text you quoted at the bottom!

I will get this changed too - thanks for flagging!

Thanks all

An error. No biggie.

To my ears 24/48 is noticeably better than 16/44 (CD) quality.

24/48 vs 24/192 is not noticeable to me.

But as hi-res lossless is going more mainstream, Sonos may want consider ticking that box moving forward?

Finally, kudos to Sonos. As far as I am aware the only way to listen to 24/48 Apple Music are

  • Homepod
  • via Apple TV as a source
  • Sonos app

Hi @JFK1

I agree - 24 bit over 16 bit is discernible, but higher sample rates are not. As you say, it is hard to tell the difference. The bandwidth required goes up proportionately with the sample rate, however, so if we supported higher rates, we’d just have more audio interruptions happening for no good reason.

Sample rates of over 48KHz are really only for in-studio use - once audio is being delivered rather than worked on, there is no advantage to using higher sample rates.
