Virtually every time I access my S1 system on my PC it demands an update. A tedious process which can take a number of minutes. This is ridiculous. Surely it doesn’t need updating every 1 or 2 days?

There aren’t that number of updates. Are you sure your update is successful across all of your devices? Have you checked in settings>system>about?
You mean an update for the app on you PC? If you do not use it very often (once every few weeks) this can occur.

The system may, as the OP suggests, demand an update every 1-2 days. If he never actually updates it.
