playing from PC with windows 7
Trying to help a friend with her speaker. She has a Windows 7 laptop, she's been using the sono speaker with no issues until recently. Can you use the device without having a smart phone or tablet?

Yes, the phone or tablet is only required for setup and system changes, the desktop controller still works for playing music.
Yes, Windows 7 still supported.

To the OP, try deleting the Sonos app off the PC, then redownloading from here:

+21Yes it’s still supported. Try uninstalling and reinstalling, be sure to chose "connect to existing network" on starting new install. Don't worry all settings and playlists are stored on the speakers so nothing will be lost.

What does “recent” mean? What version is on the PC? What version is on the Sonos speakers?

If the controller is not opening, I’d be looking strongly at some sort of virus protection program blocking it. I’d also delete the version on the PC and download a “fresh” version from the web page and try that, on the offhand chance that the current version on the PC is broken in some fashion. Just be sure, when prompted, to “connect to existing system”, which your friend already has. And it may require an update to the speakers, depending on what is running there.
