I have connected my phone via headphone jack to my gen1 play5 speaker aux input, but I get no sound output, do I need an in line amplifier to boost the phones audio output to get this to work.

It should work. Is the volume level on the phone turned up? Have you set line in level on the Sonos speaker to auto Play?
