Amp user here.

I recently found a cool, local Portland station called xray.fm. They play ZERO ads on xray.fm which is one of the parts I love (I donated to them).

I thought I’d check if there was a way to listen in Sonos and was thrilled to see xray.fm show up when I searched. I added it, clicked play and was immediately assaulted by ads! I know they aren’t coming from the actual station, so who is inserting the ads?

Like probably all of you, I purchased Sonos hardware at great cost and I can’t imagine it would be Sonos inserting them.

Can someone help me understand where the ads are coming from and if there is a way to stop them from being inserted?

If you are using TuneIn to get radio stations to play on your system you get ads. TuneIn is a service that is paid for either by ads or by a fee.

Sonos radio probably works the same.

OK, now that I look more closely I see the Tune In icon overlaid on the station’s logo. I understand that TuneIn is inserting the ads. My browser can play the station without any additional services, is there a way to add a station to Sonos without using a 3rd party service? I’ve poked around in the app but I’m not finding anything.

I understand ads support services that are otherwise free and perhaps TuneIn provides some value to some people, but in my case it’s superfluous; I don’t want a custom curated station, I want an existing station to simply play through my audio device.

Am I missing something?

Somebody needs to do the technical work to make the station available to the Sonos system. It’s probably not something the station itself has the resources (or demand) to do, especially if they don’t run ads. So being available at all is hardly superfluous.

You could have your phone do the work and AirPlay the station to your speakers…..
