What is the error message that is displayed when one reaches the maximum number of tracks?
Or, if there is no error message, what indicates that the limit has been reached?

There is no error message. There used to be a status page you could go see, but it was removed a few years ago. When you reach the track limit it simply stops indexing, ie some tracks go missing.
