Yes, I realize that this has been asked before, but with macOS losing Rosetta 2 with macOS 28, coming out in 2027, is there any chance of the desktop Sonos app being ported to Apple silicon?

I primarily use the macOS app, and am not really looking forward to relying on the web app, since I live in an area with poor internet availability.

Since they haven’t done any work (other than egregious bug fixing) on either the Windows or Mac ‘desktop’ apps for years, in favor of their web app, it does seem unlikely that there would be resources dedicated to a port.

They should put it up on github.  Somebody would do it.

That would be interesting. There are already lots of third party options, I think, although I’ve never really looked at them. Certainly for iOS, where I do the majority of my effort. The Mac app is basically used, in my situation, to start and stop playlists. I suspect the web app will do that.

Zero chance of them doing this, in fact I am guessing they are secretly enjoying the Apple announcement as it fits in with their plan to retire the Desktop apps.

Which is why you should look on the App Store for a Sonos app that is a real, native app, for ARM and Intel. Like mine (see profile).

Or you can build it yourself from the source on github if so inclined.

Well, this crappy support means that when my SONOS hardware (I’ve been a user since the beginning!) I will not buy more.

Sure, the iOS app works, but I’m on my Mac all day and I want to use it for managing my SONOS appliances.

Bad move on their part.

Huh? The web based controller continues without any issues. Just because Apple isn’t supporting ‘older’ applications doesn’t change Sonos speakers. Frankly, beyond bug fixes, Sonos hasn’t updated either the Windows or Mac desktop apps. To my knowledge, there has been no official comment from Sonos one way or the other, merely comments from us users.

And frankly, if you don’t choose to update your Mac’s OS, it wouldn’t impact you at all. I just don’t understand your outrage.

Hey, this is a concern for me as my internet is garbage due to various geographic reasons.  Im a software engineer and sonos fan since the beginning.  Ive played around with bespoke sonos control apps for personal use since the early phones began replacing the original hardware controllers we used to have.

Anyway, long story short, ai is here and theres no reason software cant do what you want.  I spent the afternoon ai/rewriting the basics of the functionality I wanted in native apple silicon using swift.  I’ve pushed it onto github  (SonosController on github) so you can grab and build it yourself or use the single release build I dropped in there.

Be aware of limitations (cant hook into services directly due to keys etc).  check out the readme and I built architecture documents in the docs folder too.

I have been using it this afternoon as a replacement and it doesnt look like there are any major bugs but who knows.  Worst case is it may crash to desktop.

Hope it helps.

LMAO

Are you serious?  Apple’s last Intel was years ago.  Most of us are on Apple silicon now and support for Intel based apps is going away with macOS 27.

ALL my vendors have updated their apps to work on the new architecture.  Sonos is not a cheap solution, and to not update the apps on two major OS’s is insane.

What is your issue? LMAO. I have four Mac’s all running Tahoe 26.3.1 (M1 thru M4). The Sonos app works with no problems.

Comprehension lad…

macOS 27+ will lose support for Intel apps. I have 7 Macs at home and 5 for work and yes, we UPDATE them!  That’s why...

I’m still at a loss to understand why the web app, instead of the Mac native app, won’t work.

I just updated my MAC OS and received a warning that Sonos will not work on the next upgrade.  No desktop app, no more Sonos for me, and I must have 20 speakers.  UGH!!

Again, at a risk of repeating myself, why won’t the web app work in place of the OS specific one did (the OS specific controller hasn’t been updated beyond bugs in ages, the web app is kept up to date)?

I currently occasionally use the OS specific app on my Intel Mac. It’s only mildly frustrating that Apple is no longer supporting applications that can run on it, but I do understand Sonos is unwilling to invest time, effort, and legal liability in an application that isn’t fully supported by the OS. At the point my Intel Mac version stops working (and it’s rarely used anyway), I’ll migrate to the web version of the controller, or continue to use my M1 Mac, or the many iOS devices I have. If there weren’t  any options, I’d agree with the frustration, but given the multitude of other options, I don’t understand any intransigence.

All I know is I use my desktop exclusively.  For those sticking up for Sonos, if it isn’t a big deal or needed, why did they ever create the application for MAC OS in the first place?  My ebay account is going to have a lot of Sonos stuff listed before long.

The fact that you “don’t understand” it means nothing to those of us whom it does matter.

Nor does why.  I simply want an app as I’ve had now for what, 20 years?

If a company the size of SONOS can’t put the efforts into evolving after years of Intel being dropped, then I will just use other options.

I no longer care.  And, I no longer purchase SONOS hardware.

You need not agree with our frustrations.

I understand using your desktop exclusively, that isn’t my use case, but certainly a valid one. What I don’t understand is why you’re unwilling to use the web app? All it ‘requires’ is a valid web browser. Certainly saves time over listing any Sonos equipment on a sales site. At least Sonos will continue to offer the web app for free, and your speakers would continue to work as before.

Why are you blaming Sonos for Apple's decision to end support for this and all the applications other folks wrote to run on it?

I'd be keeping my Sonos and unloading my Apple stuff.

My personal music library with 50K songs +/- organized into various playlists, country, reggae, rock, 70’s, 80’s party sets etc all live on my MAC, super easy for me to choose a playlist, artist etc.

Would you now?  OMG, this place has some interesting characters...LMAO!

Apple released M1 (Apple silicon) Macs in 2020 - 6 years ago.  In that time, Apple has told developers that they can use Rosetta 2 but that will go away after OS 27.

EVERY single developer has updated the software for my Mac since then.  And a couple who have not are out of business…

Sonos would have to devote very little to update the app. They are choosing not to - that is the odd thing here, not Mac users wanting a silicon app update.

Right!!  I’m going to drop Apple after 20 years of smooth and virus free use I might add. This group is either loaded with Sonos employees, or people acting like a bad parent who’s kid just did something stupid, “not my kid” :-)

That too - much of my music library is on NAS storage and not available via website.

You guys really are comics… 🤣

Just a lot of bad experiences with Apple. My last Apple device just told me it won't update as the latest os requires more free memory than I have.

On the other hand my Sonos, back to a first generation Play 1, are happily playing music.

Airgetlam
  • April 13, 2026

I guess I just don’t understand. Where you store your music doesn’t change whether or not the web app works. You can continue to store music in either your Mac or an NAS. As long as Sonos can ‘reach’ the data, it will continue to play, it makes no difference to the Sonos ‘player’ that exists not as the controller does, on your device, but at the speaker level. The controller, whether OS based, or web based, is merely a ‘window’ to display what the Sonos system on your speakers is doing.

My most sincere apologies if I’ve riled up some folks. That certainly wasn’t my intent, only to offer no to super low cost options to keep their Sonos speakers running. And specifically, I’m not a Sonos employee, otherwise I’d have ‘Sonos Employee’ next to my name on every post, like the moderators do. I am, however, an Apple user, almost exclusively.

My Intel Mac was given to me by work, my M1 Mac was a personal purchase. And no, I’m not ecstatic about Apple’s choice to no longer support Intel based Macs, but being in software myself, I understand the inability of a company to support an app when the OS is no longer supported. Shoot, I have tons of old games that will never run on newer versions of OS brought out by both Apple and Microsoft. For better or worse, Sonos stopped supporting both the desktop OS apps (Mac and Windows) years ago, in favor of mobile apps.

The web app is absolutely terrible for playing from your local music library. Especially for people who have less than perfect internet.

That is odd, the web controller is just a controller, no music data flows through it, so I'm not sure why you would see an issue with your music library. What are you seeing?

Not saying it doesn't have other issues or lack features.
