I’ve just seen on my Mac (running Tahoe 26.4.1) that the version of Sonos app I have on my computer will not open in future release of MacOS. Running Sonos S2 version 17.2. (the message directs me to an apple website to learn how to update to Apple Silicon version).
I wondered if there will be a solution going forward or is this the end of the app for MacOS?
I then discovered the last time I downloaded the installer was quite a few updates ago. I downloaded current installers as soon as they fixed that (just in case!).
I just did the same, and downloaded the latest versions as a just in case…. I don’t use the desktop apps as much as a used to, but it was always good to know I could.
Since I need to run a windows arm vm from time to time I know it should work that way. Or there’s always the older machines that are beyond the point of updating.
Its too bad, that they likely wouldn’t open source the s1 stuff… then somebody else could compile it….

You can't practically open source most commercial software as it uses proprietary libraries that you do not have a license to share. You could open the code you wrote but without the libraries it would be of little use.
Sonos does release the information needed to control the hardware and many folks have released programs to do so. Sounds like some of the AI assisted ones only took a few hours to develop.

Since we’re talking about the S1 desktop controller, I don’t expect that to become an issue. But who knows.
+18OP was talking about S2, but another poster snuck in S1 indeed. Not sure if updates to S1 firmware will not also need a newer app.
The S1 desktop controller will suffer the same fate as the S2 desktop controller once Rosetta 2 is gone. But I think the risk of running it (S1) on older computers is less. S1 firmware isn’t expected to ever add anything new, as far as I know.
My understanding for S1 is only security/bug fixes, but certainly no new ‘features’. There isn’t, I suspect, the space for anything else in the firmware. The older devices which run S1 are just too limited in onboard memory (and CPU, in some cases). It’s a common challenge in older devices. My old 386 won’t run the current version of windows, nor will my original Apple phone run the current version of iOS.

Edit: as far as I know, this is S2 only.

The S1 Controller is Apple Silicon as well.
Confirmed -- activity monitor reports that it’s “apple” now.
Also the new version is available for download (on the website) if anybody want to archive this version with the installer.
Both S1 & S2 desktop controllers are universal binaries for intel & apple silicon. Intel uses aren’t left out.
