Hi @yanikdude,
Thank you for your post, that is an excellent question.
Sonos certainly experienced the growth it did due to improved availability of better broadband connections to more people, but there has also been work on the backend to keep things running and future proof. Based on only my observations, the main online service related problems encountered are down to local connections, more so to user’s networks in their home.
Just as an example, I have a decent internet connection with a free ISP provided router and no problems using Sonos in any room apart from my bathroom. It’s not the furthers away from my router, but there is a wall of pipes in the way and this causes interference (and also would for any router).
Generally, I would always advice to check that the basics are covered as outlined here: Recommended settings for using Sonos on wireless networks | Sonos
Than get anything out of the way that interferes with wireless (pretty hard with those pipes in the wall): Reduce wireless interference | Sonos
And last, but not least, we have our support team, who have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give advice specific to a Sonos system and what it reports.
Hey Gabriel,
thank you for your response.
Reference WiFi. I have 3 access points covering my house and each SONOS has a great signal with and very low latency. 1.3ms avg. There are no dropouts, retransmits etc.
The internet service provider cable modem is in “Bridge” mode and I use my own router. My internet has a 19ms latency and very rarely has an issue. My router is constantly monitoring packets and service quality.
I have 4 x SONOS play 1s working in stereo pairs. 1 set works perfectly while the other has a lag when trying to play music, alter volume via the APP or even using the buttons, which I find strange. SONOS support have walked through a reset and re-add but still have the same issue.
IMHO there is a problem with the way that the “local” control is implemented in the Sonos App. On my local network lights and other devices controlled by Alexa respond instantly, there is zero lag. With Sonos changing the volume, adding speakers to a group or skipping a song that is playing often take 30 seconds or more. I appreciate that there are differences in the complexity of the tasks the Alexa and Sonos app are performing but by any measurement Sonos is slow when performing what are primarily local network tasks.
