Would it be possible possible to show meta data on the now playing screen, or an advanced view accessed from that screen?
So things like the file type, bit rate, year, genre etc.
Competitors such as Wiim have this as standard and it's a very useful feature. The vaguely remember it was previously available on Sonos too, in an earlier version, but I might be wrong.
Thank you.

I don’t recall ever being able to see any metadata in the Sonos controller, but it may be my memory is faulty.
I suspect there may be some underlying code needed to send any extra data to the controller for display.

I do vaguely recall the file type (flac, MP3 etc) and maybe the bitrate for local library music. But it is a very vague recollection.
Anyway, it's a very useful feature. I have a lot of old music of various formats and displaying this prompts me to Re rip my CDs to flac when listening to it, rather than having to trawl through the library on my laptop.
That said it's useful on streaming services too.
Depends on whether SMAPI sends the data. I would guess that it doesn’t, since Sonos doesn’t display it…although it must be able to see some of it, to recognize its ability to ‘play’ the data. It’s an interesting request. I can think of cases where it could be trouble, and cause for complaints, especially on slow connections (like mine), but I’m super conservative about bandwidth. Not against the idea, as I say, it’s an interesting, and potentially useful request. Certainly some of that data does show in the details ‘about my system’ when you’re streaming, but not all of it.
Wiim definitely displays the file types and bit rates on their Now Playing screen. I know this because I have one.

Hi @Parsnip62
Thanks for your post!
It sounds like a sensible suggestion to me! Thank you - I've marked this thread as a feature request and it will be seen by the relevant teams for consideration. Keep the ideas coming!
Please don't clutter the now playing screen with extended meta data. A simple [i] button for ‘more info’ would suffice for the limited times you would want that info.

Years ago when I used to rip CDs, maintain a local NAS, edit meta data, cover art etc, I used iTunes, and created iTunes ‘smart play lists’ to identify files with missing artwork, below a certain quality, etc. This is also available in Apple Music, and I expect any other software package for maintaining a local music library.
What software are you using to manage your library?
My apps for Windows, Xbox and iOS display the frequency and sample size (on S2 systems) and whether it is lossless.

I have a free version of dbpoweramp but it has very limited features. I just use it to rip CDs.
I also used dBpoweramp for my last ripping session, but was back in 2015. Then used tag&rename, PerfectTunes and iTunes to manage library after ripped. Any library manager will help you find tracks that you need to re-rip due to quality, or check metadata.

It does have good tagging software for downloaded music.
Thanks. I ditched Apple years ago.
Same here due to lack of FLAC support.

The free version doesn't seem to.
