A Long-Time Sonos User's Frustration with the App Experience

I've been a Sonos customer for over 14 years, and I feel compelled to share my experience with the Sonos app, because frankly, it continues to be one of the most frustrating pieces of software I use on a regular basis.

Let me start by saying that I love the hardware. Sonos speakers sound fantastic, are reliable, and look great. If someone asks me whether Sonos makes excellent speakers, my answer is absolutely yes.

The problem is the app (old or new).

Simple tasks that should take seconds often turn into exercises in patience. Switching between audio sources feels unnecessarily complicated and far from intuitive. Grouping and ungrouping speakers works inconsistently, and when it doesn't behave as expected, figuring out why can become a troubleshooting session of its own. The search and browse experience is often confusing and cumbersome, making it harder than it should be to simply find and play music.

And before anyone suggests that I'm struggling with technology, let me provide some context: I work in IT. Navigating software, configuring systems, and learning new interfaces are part of my daily life. Smartphones, computers, and apps are not foreign concepts to me. Yet I regularly find myself wondering what the designers of the Sonos user interface were thinking.

Over the years, I've used countless apps and platforms. Most applications strive to make common tasks easier, faster, and more intuitive. The Sonos app often feels like it does the opposite. Instead of focusing on the joy of listening to music, I'm too often forced to spend time figuring out where features moved, how a setting is supposed to work, or why something that was simple yesterday suddenly feels complicated today.

If someone asked me today whether I recommend Sonos, my answer would be:

If you want a great-sounding speaker, absolutely.

If you want a seamless, intuitive software experience that lets you enjoy music without constantly fighting the interface, I'd have a very hard time recommending it.

At some point, great hardware is not enough. The software is the primary way customers interact with the product, and after 14 years of ownership, I still find the Sonos app to be one of the biggest obstacles to enjoying an otherwise excellent audio system.

Am I the only long-time Sonos user who feels this way?

Sonos is trying to improve the app, nice topic here asking for input and feedback a while back.

Also the trial user interface changes are a good start in my opinion.

Many poor design decisions have been made, I suspect by someone other than daily users of Sonos gear. It looks like that realization is taking hold at the headquarters and they are working to find better usability.

Perhaps joining a beta might enhance the ability to mold the experience into one you might prefer?

I still find the Sonos app to be one of the biggest obstacles to enjoying an otherwise excellent audio system.

You are not forced to use the Sonos App to listen to music on your Sonos system, there are many 3rd party Apps, voice control, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, AutoPlay on line-in etc that allow you alternative way to listen.

If you use Apple devices, look at iOS Shortcuts to create the common tasks you find difficulty navigating the Sonos App. As you work in IT, HomeAssistant has good integration, if you want a simple way to ‘roll your own’ interface.

I agree that it’s way too difficult to use. The suggestions provided in the replies are good starting points, but also rely on either downloading MORE apps, or require the user to be relatively tech savvy just to perform a basic speaker function, which is ridiculous. I’m very tech savvy and still struggle with Sonos. I’ve had to hire professional AV teams to help me with our Sonos system (which took them hours to figure out what should have been a very easy command on my app). Unfortunately, there aren’t better speakers (IMO), so we’re left to just put up with it.

I’ve been on beta for many years, and tested multiple products. During these testing periods I expressed basic (and complex) frustrations. I’ve provided plenty of additional feedback over the years and haven’t seen any changes. If the day ever comes when I’m able to simply stream music to the desired speaker without technical difficulty for TWO DAYS in a row, I’ll be a happy camper. It’s very disappointing that that’s all I’m asking for.

Just my 2 cents. I've owned and used Sonos for over 15 years in a multi room setting and it has worked flawlessly during that entire period. I do admit I ran into some hiccups but they invariably proved to be related to my own network, my own wifi.

Hmmm...So by your account you’ve been in Sonos Beta for many years (although vague as you didn’t specify Sonos). Of all those years (in Beta) you just  joined the community on September 7th 2026 to share an opinion. Also, no listing of any Sonos products in your profile. However, thanks for the admission that there are no better speakers.

You should tryout some 3rd party control Apps. If you find an App that you like, there’s no point struggling with an App that you don’t like.

Yeah, I don't think it requires insider information to assume someone who has been a Beta tester for years wouldn't have a username that was registered today.
