A linux controller for the Sonos system is really needed. A basic controller shouldn't be that hard to create, so even if the userbase is smaller then for Windows there shouldn't be a cost-reason to not do this. The strength of Sonos is ease-of use, and a user that -for instance- prefers Ubuntu will be left to use his/her phone.
+1 for a Linux or webbased controller!
Now Squeezebox has been sunsetted by Logitech I'm looking for an alternative to move to, so immediately thought of Sonos. It's with disbelief I find that popular every day Linux flavours like Ubuntu are not supported! Amazing. Sonos must be loosing a lot of customers.
It's really a pity that there's no web-based client that will solve any cross-platform related problem. What leaves me really unsatisfied tough is the lack of interest and feedback by Sonos team (at least I can't found any feedback in this thread nor in the web one).

BTW, I just tried Janos has been update some hours ago. It works on my ubuntu 12.04. Well, it "works" means that I can open it, see my queue and control playing but I can't search on my deezer library and worst part: it crashes every now and then 😞
I was about to purchase some Sonos speakers, but the lack of linux support is keeping me from investing in such a purchase. The ball is in your court, Sonos.
I'd be happy with command lines (debian/mint preferred) for JUST play/pause/next ...

without a zillion depends like the above link would need (or the horror of needing wine to work)
It seems Sonos has noticed the growing number of disaffected linux-users: https://ask.sonos.com/sonos/topics/linux_webcontroller?utm_content=reply_link&utm_medium=email&utm_source=reply_notification#reply_13441057

Good to hear, thakns. But why don't they reply in this thread then?
Well im allso hoping for this to happens...

I guess too many people wont be happy by the reply... Might aswell keep it quiet.
A native Linux controller please.
Another one for a controller which can be used from Linux. Where is the difficulty for a Linux native Controller?
+1 to a native client or web interface - PLEASE. I have been using Sonos since controller 1. I finally upgraded to controller 2 and have been waiting all this time for Linux or web. I also use Vortexbox (which is Linux, btw).
+1 for a Linux controller.

Seems like it's a case of 'great product, crap support'.

Prove me wrong!
Well, this is an interesting thread. I'm looking into linux option because the iOS controller for ipad and iPhones so flaky it's driving me nuts. There are many many issues on the forums about iOS devices. I can control my system with android or the sonos controller, but I want a controller in each room. I wish I had never bought the sonos. The quality of the sound is excellent, and when it works it works great, however I think the support channels are poor.
I am one of the persons waiting long years for a linux client. While a native linux client would be great, I would be quite happy with a working Windows version with wine. This should be far easier to do for a skilled programmer.

Furthermore it would only be fair to give the linux community something back. Sonos wouldn't be sonos if it were not able to build on the foundations of a working and free operating system.
The only 'sort of working' alternative for linux users is currently Janos. Great piece of work for which the programmer deserves a lot of brownie points, but in no way as feature complete as a native client would have to be. As it stands at the moment, I can only advise Linux users to look for manufacturers other than sonos.
I don't think that is an actual solution for the problem, namely there is no easy support for popular systems like Ubuntu. (A similar suggestion would be to run windows in a virtual box on your machine. Possible, but not a solution). So while I consider this offtopic, let me comment on it so we don't get a longer discussion about it 🙂 1. It is tricky to get it on a virtual device. The market isn't installed on the AVD by default, so you either need to get an AVD with pre-installed market, or you need to find a different way to get in in there. 2. The Sonos app isn't really happy about being installed on 'random' devices. It most probably won't install on your AVD from the market. See this thread for discussion (it escalates pretty quickly, not a pretty topic.): http://forums.sonos.com/showthread.php?t=24453&page=3 . Lets just say that it isn't sonos' intention to release the APK for this kind of hacking. It isn't _that_ hard to get the APK (basically, get yourself a rooted phone, install the app, backup it, and presto), but in the end you have to re-do all this once the updates come...

Nonsense -- who wants to want 3 minutes for virtual box to boot just so that you can play music. Usability fail.
Please add Linux support.
+1 for a linux controller!

Obviously, as many of you already said, the lack of a Linux controller is a definite showstopper for me. I already have first-generation Sonos products, and I was planning to extend the system, but this will *not* happen without a Linux controller -- all my home PCs are Linux-based ...

Since Sonos doesn't seem to understand, I thinks we should all start searching for other solutions, and never mind them. They should soon see how many customers they're losing ...
Dear SONOS and Sonos fans, new year is coming and new challenges and opportunities.

Take care with both of them, do not miss good moments new market segments mentioned throughout this topic.

AND, do not miss following happenings other part of the world.

Sorry a bit for the website of this link but I found the only this news in English on the new award winning invention from a small town from Hungary.

Take care new market challenges are coming as the new news indicating they this boy intends to build a factory producing speakers with very high sound quality.

The support of your Sonos fans, including the Linux fans, could be very important for Sonos in the new years come.

Good luck.

Tamas
I am now advising the growing number of those of my clients who are linux users explicitly against the purchase of Sonos systems. It seems that with the introduction of Windows 8 and the end of support for XP many Windows users finally change to linux. The NSA scandal might have to do with that, too.

By chance, do you have success story with this?

I am failed, even if I tried to install the requested packages.
+1 for linux support!
