I have several Sonos ZP120 circa 2006.  Is it possible to set them up to be a dumb amp? My thought would be to use a newer Sonos PORT RCA outpout that would feed into the ZP120.   Im cool with setting the ZP120’s up using the S1 app, but then simply Set-it and forget it and uninstall the app.
what I dont know, and looking for advise from the comminuty, is;
-  Can the ZP120, if never touched fall back and stay at the Line-in input setting?

- Is the Sonos PORT RCA output varabile? ie: If the ZP120 volume is permenatly set to say, 90%, would the varabile RCA outbout from the PORT be akin to a volume control. There by adjusting the room volume from the S2 app?

- does the ZP120 have a sleep, and//or auto wake from the RCA input.  id hate to add to the global warming by having them amplfy hiss and dead air. ;-)

ive got 2 Listening Zones with 2 and 4 in-celing speakers respectvily. The zone with 4 speakers cannot handel the power of a newer Sonos AMP @ 4 Oms ( I think).  I use the zones vary rarely so the Idea of dropping $1400 (or $1000 and burning two 30% discount codes) + new celing speakers stings a bit too much to the wallet.  repurposing the ZP120’s and spending $500 on a Port is eaiser for me.  If this configuration is not possible or to “jankey” then for the $500+/- price point Ill look at getting a Roam2 or ERA100 and/or Beam Gen2 and/or sub mini. Then simply abandoning the in-celing speakers. *insert sad face*

for details the 4 x  in-celing speakers are  super old Klipsh 2-way CS-650-R 35watt (140 wattt peak) 8Ohm

thanks for any advice.
cheers,
chad

You’ll need to use the S1 app, and to select line-in after a power outage. You don’t need a Port, the ZP120 has RCA audio input.

thank you Controlav. However what im trying to achlompish is Semi-intergrating the rest of my Gen2 Sonos home gear into theses two Listening Zones. Example, via the S2 app. I start a podcast, and select “Party Mode” that includes the Sonos PORT, I would ike to hear the the audo in thoes Zones being powered by the ZP120’s

thats also a good point of having to use the S1 App after a power outtage.

If you set Autoplay to On in the settings for the Connect:Amp Line-In, it will play anytime there is input on the Line-In.  This setting will also survive a power failure.

You sure a C:A on S1 has Autoplay? I thought that was the HT devices only (eg the Amp). I know my P:5s do not for line-in.

The original Play:5 had Autoplay for the Line-In.  I’ve used one as a standalone at a party.  Not sure if it has it still, but I know it did back in the day.

Thankyou both for taking the time to post on my old @ss equipment.

the ZP120/COnnect I have is circa 2008. to help answner your questions, from a factory reset, sonos update, and looking in on the S1 app. yes there is AutoPlay function is there.  as soon as the device dectecs an incomming RCA signal, the option on the S1 app is no longer ‘Greyed out’, and I can make adjustments to it.  From there I can set:

  •  Auto Play Room assgiment
  • auto play volume Range from 1% -to- 100% .  I ASSUME this is a preset volume for the ZP120 to play based on the the RCA input ‘level’ is static.

Oh my bad, my P5:G1 (S1) and P5:G2 (S2) both have it as an option, when I dig down enough through settings.
