Sound distortion when Connect added

I recently added a Connect so my Klipsch Sixes could play the same music with my Play:1’s. I’m using the phono outlet on the Sixes and line out on the Connect (the optical is broken). If I play the music very quietly it doesn’t sound bad, not great but not bad. As soon as I turn the volume up there is an incredible amount of distortion in the Sixes and I can’t figure out why. Any advice?  I want to crank all of them at the same time.

I think the Speakers have an integrated phono pre-amp and its possibly that causing the distortion I think there is a switch to change the phono input to analogue RCA ‘line-in’ - see attached, but not sure where the switch is located 🤷‍♂️. HTH
