I have a perfectly functional Sonos Gen 1 system with several Sonos amps driving in wall and freestanding speakers and subs. Obviously the older stuff is not really supported anymore, but it still works fine. Question is…can I purchase a Sonos port and integrate it into the existing system to upgrade to the newest operating system? Will it then feed to the other amps (there are 4 total.)

I hate to toss perfectly functional equipment. I typically listen to only 1 or 2 rooms at a time from my iPad or iPhone as it’s just me living in the house.

The FAQ on the sales page says this:

Can I use the Sonos S1 Controller with Port?

Port requires the latest generation of the Sonos app (Sonos S2). Learn more here.

This means you could run it side by side with your current system, just not using the same controller, playing ‘grouped’ content.

There certainly isn’t any reason I can see to toss your current equipment, in fact, some of it may actually be capable to be updated to S2.

I’m assuming when you say ‘Gen 1 Amps’, you really mean Gen 1 CONNECT:AMPs.

Since the old gear is still supported why replace it?

If you need another Sonos device going older, used will let you integrate it with your existing Sonos.

Port works in S1 and S2. I run Port in S1 together with all the other players after downgrading the whole system after the whole S2 App fiasco and it works just fine.
