It testing a Sonos setup for our new workboat and before installing I set it up on the floor to make sure it all works. The inside is being driven by 1 Amp and 2 Sonos ceiling speakers plus a sub. The Sonos ceiling speakers I just sat on the floor when testing. When I turned the volume up over 40% the speakers made a bad banging sound and the woofer seemed to be going crazy bouncing back in forth. It was the bass but it sounded awful. Once I went to 25% volume the bass sounded normal. I was wondering if this because they need to be in a void to sound correct. I want to know before we go ahead and cut holes in the roof of the boat if this is likely normal because they’re not in an enclosed void or if possible there’s a default. Was surprised how bad they sounded for expensive speakers. Wires were all red to red and black to black, 12 gauge. I have Sonos play 5 etc at home and they sound incredible hence why I pretty disappointed when testing these ceiling speakers on the floor.

Might need to be secured to avoid bouncing.
Without a divider the low end is self-cancelling.
Grab a sheet of cardboard or ¼ plywood and set them up on that. Make the speaker holes near the center of the sheet to reduce the cancellation problem. Stand it in a doorway and eliminate it.
