Sonos Amp and Architectural Speakers on same "wireless" network?

I just installed a Sonos Amp connected to a pair of Sonos Architectural Ceiling Speakers (8”). The setup seems to work fine and plays correctly.  However when I try to detect the Architectural Speakers, I get an error that they cannot be found. “Make sure you’re connected to the same wireless network as Sonos, and give it another try.”

My Sonos Amp is hardwired to my router via the network port but on the same home network. My phone running the Sonos app is obviously wireless. Is the error message literal? Does my amp really need to be wirelss? If so, does it get even crazier and do they both need to be on either 2.4 or 5 band?

The Architectural speakers don’t connect to the internet, they are just passive speakers with no radios.  What exactly are you trying to do?  Do you mean Trueplay?

I know the passive speakers wouldn’t be on the network. That’s another reason the error message is misleading.

I’m trying to “Detect Sonos Architectural” as documented in the installation kit and in the app.

Sonos App/System Settings - Your System/ select Amp / Detect

The speakers are brand new Sonos Architectural Ceiling Speakers (8”), wired directly to the amp. No volume controls or other devices in between.

During the ‘Detect’ operation a high frequency tone is emitted. Distance, room noise, and phone covering or orientation could interfere with tone detection. FWIW: I was able to Trueplay a 6” set yesterday without any fuss.

The tone never starts. The error message pops up immediately after clicking on the detect button.

The app is running on an Android phone. Sonos claims it will work. But I now have my doubts. Anyone been able to get this to work on an Android.

Trueplay works only in Apple.

I know Trueplay is Apple only,

But in typical Sonos fashion, their marketing leaves a bit to be desired. No where in any of the documentation does it state “IOS/Apple app required”. The information below can be interpreted to imply that speaker detection and Trueplay are different and distinct processes.

Does sonos architectural speaker detection work when using the Sonos app on Android?

 

Yes, the Sonos app on Android does support architectural speaker detection. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Ensure that you're connecting the same type of speaker to your Sonos Amp. In-ceiling and in-wall speakers can't be connected to the same Amp for the detection process to work.

If you're using in-wall volume controls, set the control to 100% before attempting the detection process. If the issue continues, bypass the in-wall volume control by connecting your architectural speakers directly to the Amp to complete Trueplay tuning.

When using a speaker selector switch, bypass the switch by connecting your architectural speakers directly to the Amp to complete Trueplay tuning.

Remember, the Sonos app will need permission to use your device's microphone for the Trueplay tuning process. This is the only time Sonos will use audio collected by your device’s microphone.

 

All requirements are met and microphone use by the app is enabled. I’ll try to reach them next week. I was transferred to a chat queue to talk to a specialist. #34 in line.   Given it’s late on a Friday afternoon, I’m not going to wait now.
