Same exact problem here with my Sonos sound bar.  Sound shutters on optical input regardless of swapping cables in and out.  Also switched TV and still the problem persists.  This is a problem with the Sonos sound bar optical in, but it seems as though they don’t know or want to fix the problem.

What did Sonos Support say, when you called them about it?

In addition to @Airgetlam question….

  1. Are you using S1 or S2 controller?
  2. Have you checked for updates?
  3. If you remove the Playbar does audio still stutter?
  4. What is the source of the audio?
  • Cable TV
  • Smart TV App
  • AppleTV
  • Roku Stick
  • Amazon Fire Stick
  • Google Chrome Cast
  • Music Streamed via Sonos App

EDIT:

I was wondering why you said you have the same problem; but I see you are participating in the thread below as well. Now it begs the question...are you using an Arc or Playbar?

As @Airgetlam asked in the thread below if you are using an Arc why are you not using the HDMI connection? Finally posting in two threads only causes duplication.

Hmmm….one more question….did you contact Sonos Support as @Airgetlam asked or are you just “parroting” what the OP mentioned in the thread below (i.e. “but it seems as though they don’t know or want to fix the problem”). Again not very helpful when trying to offer assistance.

Probably the we are not open message, hence the post here.

In using the newest S2 controller.  I’ve updated all my speakers.  I’ve unplugged them.  I’ve tried two different optical cables.  I’ve tried my TV out to the Sonos play bar and also a HD radio that I just bought and still the same skipping and shuddering.    When I play audio through pandora or anything other than this optical SPDIF connection it sounds perfectly fine.  I’ll have to call Sonos and find out more information on this.  Could it be that both of my audio optical cables have gone bad?  They’re Amazon basics cables.  They don’t look damaged at all.

Optical cables can deteriorate overtime. Also, you may still see light at each end even though the glass-like transmission line has a hairline split. Since they are Amazon basics….$8_USD isn’t much to spend to verify if the cables are bad given that some cost upwards of $25_USD and more (i.e Rocketfish or Monster).

Found out the problem. It was the Sangean HDT-20  HD radio receiver.  The LG TV that I have used to shutter on my Sonos equipment but no longer does as they’ve fixed it.  The Sangean optical SPDIF out port was the problem.  I’ve read in reviews others have had the same problem with this make and model’s optical out.
